Inmates allege rampant abuse

ATLANTA --- A group of prisoners filed a class-action lawsuit Tuesday contending that Georgia corrections officers have systematically beaten restrained inmates in prisons throughout the state, leaving two dead and dozens of others injured.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Valdosta, names 25 guards and other corrections officials as culprits in routine beatings and torture of restrained inmates. It also claims they subsequently covered up the abuses by inflicting even more beatings on prisoners who file complaints.

The complaint, filed by seven Valdosta State Prison inmates, contends that members of the prison's response team kicked them with combat boots, choked them with night sticks and donned black leather "beating gloves" to carry out the attacks between October 2005 and August 2007.

The lawsuit also mentions the cases of more than 40 inmates in other Georgia prisons who claim that guards strapped inmates to iron beds and left them without food or water for as long as two days and banned beating victims from seeing family members or being photographed. Most of the incidents allegedly took place between 2003 and 2005.

Paul Czachowski, a spokesman for the state's corrections system, said there is a "pending investigation" into the Valdosta State Prison. He declined further comment until he saw the lawsuit.

The beatings have become a "very ingrained brutal practice that is covered up by the guards, supervisors, wardens and medical personnel," said McNeill Stokes, an Atlanta defense attorney who filed the lawsuit.

Mr. Stokes has filed more than 40 lawsuits throughout the state over the past few years contending the beatings are banned by the Georgia Constitution, which says "neither banishment beyond the limits of the state nor whipping shall be allowed as a punishment for a crime."

god forbid it was someone you know who was abused by one these guards whom i might add take an oath to protect and serve not to beat down and brutilize.

gnx

Sure shelly - and god forbid that 'poor prisoner' was the filth who either raped your cousin or robbed your grandparents at gun point. Granted, not all of them are incarcerated for the same reasons but it's prison for heaven's sake.

A city cop was on his

horse waiting to cross the street when a little girl named Mary, riding

her new shiny bike stopped beside him.

"Nice bike" the cop said

"did Santa bring it to you?" "Yep," the little girl replied, "he sure

did!"

The cop looked the bike

over and handed the girl a $20 ticket for a safety violation.

The cop said, "Next year tell Santa to put a reflector light on the back

of it."

Mary looked up at the cop

and said, "Nice horse you got there sir, did Santa bring it to you?"

"Yes, he sure did," chuckled the cop.

Mary looked up at the cop and said, "Next year tell Santa the dick goes

underneath the horse, not on top.

To gnx and other assorted "crazies," try reading state and federal laws regarding beating inmates. See, as Americans, we believe in the rule of law, not allowing sadistic idiots to just beat the hell out of someone because they had a bad day. In fact, these officers specifically take an oathe of office NOT to conduct themselves the way you think they should. Sure, these prisoners are "filth," but they're OUR filth. I believe in the death penalty because it's provided for by law. Let's just follow the law.

antinocon perhaps you'd like to put a uniform on and give it a try?if you've never been in a prison or jail please refrain from commenting.it is a volatile, evil place to be. you are literally surrounded by the scum of the earth.most prisons now have these response teams.they are trained to respond to big emergencies, riots, possible escapes, etc. only.whenever they've had to be deployed means that the situation had gotten out of control. you have up to 1,500 + inmates in a prison and maybe 250-300 guards.the stress is unbelieveable, and the turnover rate is astronomical, why not apply for a position. you wouldn't last 2 days.

concernedjustice

the south shows itself again gaurds who beat prisoners because they believe it their god given right and idiot commentors that say they dont care and say to beat those who are locked up if the American public just new how our prinson and justice system really worked they would be horrorfied I hope none of the commentors ever get in trouble but beware if you do your in for a rude awaking

charlesmanson

like i said to antineocon there concernedjustice there are plenty of guard positions open, put the uniform on and monitor 90-110 inmates at one time, with a walkie talkie and a telephone.see how you feel after some scum [filtered word] gets in your face and threatens to kill you and your family, then throws a plate of food or you know what in your face.the scum is locked away from us not the other way around.they screwed up their lives let them suffer the consequences.i can get you an application if you'd like.

To Charlieyonce: I worked in law enforcement and the penal system for over 30 years, and while what you say about scum threatening correctional officers and acting like animals is true, it doesn't justify two or three officers beating the hell out of one of them. Please don't refer to these officers as "guards." They're better than that.

SunDown

Some of these posts are kind of silly. I certainly don't have a lot of sympathy for some of the animals in the lock up but it is against the law for guards to beat them. Of course who knows how many of these inmates are lieing. Abusing the prisoners simply creates, and sustains a dangerous environment in the lockup. Besides that it just isn't right.

a crazy old man

I just about bet there wasn’t a one beat that didn't provoke it upon themselves. So therefore I stand by what I said, beat the he*^ out of them and maybe they’ll think twice next time and if I screw up and get locked up beat the he*^ out of me to.
