Kia assembly plant opens for applicants

WEST POINT --- Officials expect thousands of applicants to seek jobs at a new Kia automobile assembly plant in west Georgia, which began taking online applications Tuesday.

Kia Motors Corp. began taking applications at about 11 a.m. The South Korea-based company said about 9,000 people had signed up at the Web site before the announcement to receive an alert when the application process opened.

Kia, which will manufacture the Sorento sports utility vehicle at its West Point, Ga., factory, is accepting applications only via the Internet.

The plant is expected to create more than 2,500 jobs directly and many more at five nearby plants that supply parts.

Candidate descends from 320-foot tower

ATLANTA --- A TV reporter turned political candidate has descended from his perch atop a 320-foot tower where he spent a week to draw attention to his long-shot U.S. Senate bid.

Dale Cardwell was hoisted to the top of the Corey Tower near downtown Atlanta shortly before noon New Year's Day. He remained there for the past week as temperatures plummeted, sleeping in an insulated sleeping bag and eating military rations. A webcam tracked his limited movements on the tower's small scaffold.

Mr. Cardwell says he came down Tuesday just after 10:30 a.m. because he's sent the message he wanted to: that voters must elect a senator "who will shun special interest cash and work only for the people."

President of Atlanta private school dies

COLLEGE PARK --- The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office is trying to determine the cause of death of the president of Woodward Academy in College Park.

Sixty-year-old Harry Payne was found dead Monday afternoon in Midtown Atlanta. Students at the private school learned of his death when they returned from the holiday break Tuesday.

His death was announced on the school's Web site, which called Mr. Payne "a great man, a visionary leader and a loyal friend."

Egg company looks for place to build

HOMER --- The owner of a Gainesville company that produces and ships eggs is looking for a new location after dropping plans to build an egg farm in Banks County.

Country Charms Eggs pursued rezoning to allow an egg farm in Banks County after being turned down by Madison County. Company officials announced last week that they were backing away from the project because of public opposition.
