UGA president calls for playoff

POLL
Would Georgia have won a championship this year under the playoff system proposed Tuesday?

ATHENS, Ga. --- University of Georgia President Michael Adams is calling for the NCAA to run an eight-team football playoff to replace the Bowl Championship Series format when current contracts expire after the 2009 season.

The move comes after the conclusion of a season in which Georgia, 11-2, was left out of the BCS title game and finished No. 2 in The Associated Press poll and No. 3 in the USA Today coaches' poll, both released Tuesday.

LSU defeated Ohio State 38-24 for the BCS national championship Monday night in New Orleans.

"This year's experience with the BCS forces me to the conclusion that the current system has lost public confidence and simply does not work," Dr. Adams, who heads the NCAA executive committee, said in a statement Tuesday. "It is undercutting the sportsmanship and integrity of the game."

University of Florida President Bernie Machen proposed a playoff plan last year that was shot down by other SEC presidents.

"A playoff system is never going to happen," Ohio State President and former Vanderbilt President E. Gordon Gee told the New York Daily News . "Judging the landscape right now, it's more likely (university presidents) would step back to the traditional bowl system."

Dr. Adams called "particularly disturbing" the influence of a television company (Disney-owned ABC and ESPN, which he did not name) and took aim at conference and bowl commissioners.

"The increasing concentration of power in one television company that has shown in this year's bowl selection process the capacity to influence public opinion, including that of coaches, in an arbitrary way," he said. "This one network ownership controls more than two-thirds of the football games broadcast and virtually all of the non-BCS bowls. There are clear built-in conflicts."

Dr. Adams called for an NCAA selection committee to place the top eight teams in the four major BCS bowls, with the winner of those bowls to play in two playoff games on the first Saturday at least a week after the New Year's bowls. The national championship game would follow the next Saturday.

The playoff would replace a BCS system Dr. Adams called disturbing for "the concentration of power among the conference and bowl commissioners, and particularly the lack of opportunity for input into their closed-circle decision-making based on traditional contract alliances."

That system produced lopsided games this year in the Rose Bowl (Southern California defeated Illinois 49-17) and the Sugar Bowl (Georgia beat Hawaii 41-10).

The current BCS title game matches the top two teams in the BCS standings, which uses a formula that includes the coaches' poll, the Harris poll and computer rankings.

Dr. Adams had voiced concern about extending the season into a second semester, but he said only four teams would be involved at that point and that he would consider returning to an 11-game schedule.

BCS officials said Monday they would discuss a plus-one format, which would set up a national title game after the Rose, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta bowls are played. That would likely set up a No. 1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3 matchups.

Dr. Adams will propose his plan to NCAA President Myles Brand and the executive board.

Let's just put it this way.

Let's just put it this way. If Georgia did play USC, it would have been a hell of a lot better Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl! What would have been an awesome National Championship game would have been LSU-UGA! But of course, two SEC teams could be the top two teams in the nation, but wait a minute, THEY ARE!!!

Has he been hiding in a cave with Osama Bin Laden for the past five years? Did it really take him that long to see how bad the BCS is?

Ga whine all you want, but

Ga whine all you want, but the fact is you didnt win your division, lost to sc, didnt play in your sec championship game, exactly what did you do to deserve to play in the national championship game? yes there should be a playoff, but you were not mistreated, you failed to do your job to get you to the BCS title game.

The only individuals that

The only individuals that will EVER be satisfied with the current BCS system will be supporters of the team declared #1. I do not know why the NCAA will not give in to the desire of the majority for the crowning of a definitive college football champion! Just think how ridiculous it would be if the NFL stopped the season short of the Super Bowl.

JESSIE, Tell me where in the

JESSIE,
Tell me where in the BCS system that it says that you have to win your conference to play in the national title game! Refer to college basketball or baseball, you don't have to win your conference but if your a hot team and on a roll you can win the championship come PLAYOFF TIME. UGA was as hot as it gets and the rest of the country sure didn't want to face us. All other levels and sports have playoffs, now is the time for playoff system.

UGA couldn"t beat Tennessee

UGA couldn"t beat Tennessee and SC, so no way should they have played for the National championship. If your conference has a championship game, you should at least be playing in that game to be considered the best in the country. The only other way I could see it is if the SEC allowed all it's school's to play every team in the conference, and if you end up with the best record, go from there. Next year, instead of scheduling cupcakes like Troy, consider playing the conference teams not on your schedule. The difficulty of the SEC will put your team above most teams in the country just by playing all your conference foes.

Thohen....Every team in the

Thohen....Every team in the conference (SEC) lost at least 2 games. Does it make LSU better than GA because we lost SC and Tenn but they lost to Kentucky and Arkansas? Get a clue. Only reason Ohio St. got ot go was all the cupcakes they had to beat in that pathetic Big 10 conference. We need to have a play off, that way the top teams would get a chance to compete against each other and take the politics out of it. Also we need to get rid of Corso the idiot.

I have been reading all of

I have been reading all of the latest uga football articles and each one, everyone says the exact same thing. we know that we lost to tenn and sc, nobody has denied that we lost those two games. and don't talk about strenght of schedule, i believe a "cupcake" like troy beat the same oklahoma state team that georgia beat, there is not a single team in the NCAA that doesn't schedule at least 2 or 3 games with lesser football programs. hell, look at Ohio State's schedule, they only played 3 or 4 teams that finished with a winning record. look what happened to michigan. next year UGA is playing Georgia Southern, who beat App State this year. The SEC is already better than most teams in the country by playing the schedule they play now, I think their Bowl Record this year shows it (7-2) more teams than any other conference and more wins.

pablanco sounds like a

pablanco sounds like a whining clemson tiger fan. clemson didnt deserve to be in the top 25 and if the old ball coach had trusted his offence and went for that first down and not punted the ball away like tuberville did in overtime carolina would have beat the bunch of cry babys from orange land. georgia may not have won the national championship. but with a playoff system they would have been in the elite 8. not in the chicken bowl in atlanta ga. u take away the thunder and lighting and clemson is a nothing. thunder will bail this year and if lighting is smart he will go after the money too. clemson pays well but u will always be playing for a losing team there. unless u count wins against the high school teams they beat this year.

lsu had a slow defensive line

lsu had a slow defensive line and no real runnig attack. they scored on a blocked fg attempt, and some turnovers. Our Defense is nfl like, quick off the line, hard hitting, and smart. our running game is second to none, and our passing game is above average. Our couch is a genius, and our fans are the best in the country.

I still am waiting to hear pablanco's argument about the SEC being weak...the argument he made before the BCS game....then he went away for a few days. I guess hoping everyone would forget.
