Lynx begin new year in style

A new year brought the same results for the Augusta Lynx. They won at home in their first game of 2008, and they did it in dramatic fashion.

Augusta improved to 13-4-0 at home with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Columbia Inferno on Friday night at James Brown Arena.

The home team trailed 2-1 entering the third period, but goals by captain Louis Goulet and Igor Pohanka late in the game made the rally possible.

The Inferno (12-15-4-4) hadn't lost a game in regulation when leading after two periods, but Pohanka picked up a loose puck in front of the net and beat Columbia goaltender Jeff Jakaitis high glove-side for the game-winning goal with 1:39 left.

Lynx defenseman Ken Scuderi returned to the ice after missing three games with an injury, and he didn't waste any time making an impact. The starting defenseman scored on the first shot of the game to give the Lynx (18-12-0-3) a 1-0 lead after only 39 seconds of play.

Scuderi brought the puck into the zone and fired a slap shot from just inside the blue line. Jakaitis got a skate on the puck but the deflection wasn't enough to keep it out of the net.

The Inferno evened the score later in the first period when defenseman Patrick Wellar took the puck behind the net and centered to Steve McJannet, who beat Lynx goaltender Bobby Goepfert for a 1-1 tie after a period of play.

Columbia took control of the game with a dominant second period. Forward Liam Huculak started it with a breakaway goal on a turnover deep in the Lynx's zone. Columbia's defense took care of the rest.

The visiting Inferno killed three Lynx power plays in the second period including 1:19 of 5-on-3 play in favor of the Lynx. Jakaitis stopped all nine shots in the period and went into the second intermission with a one-goal lead.

The Lynx appeared headed for their second loss in a row, but things turned around in the third period when Goulet's goal tied the game and put a spark in the home team.

The game-tying goal set up Pohanka's game-winner and his sixth score of the season.

I'll be in Columbia, too. This is exciting hockey. If you have not been in awhile, come out and see competitive hockey at the James Brown Arena.
