Driver leaves baby at crash

Richmond County authorities say an Augusta woman fleeing a wreck Thursday involving an allegedly stolen car handed her baby girl to someone in the gathering crowd, perhaps so she could better elude police.

According to authorities, the driver of a white Pontiac Grand Prix ran a stop sign, which caused the collision. She then handed her infant to a bystander and fled.

But Tomeka L. Rollans, 18, who lives in Gilbert Manor, was caught and faces several traffic charges and a theft by receiving charge after she drove through a stop sign at the intersection of 12th and Dugas streets, then collided with an oncoming car, according to sheriff's Maj. Richard Weaver.

Just minutes earlier, a man who had reported his white Pontiac Grand Prix stolen said he saw Ms. Rollans, her 11-month-old baby, and a 16-year-old girl -- Robenette Scriven -- driving in what looked like his car on R.A. Dent Boulevard, Maj. Weaver said.

The man, whose name was not immediately available, began to follow the suspect and called to warn police that he had spotted the vehicle.

"When she gets to the stop sign at Dugas Street and 12th Street, she busts the stop sign, and the lady northbound on 12th Street hits her in the passenger side, causing the vehicle to flip over on its top," Maj. Weaver said of the accident, which happened about 2 p.m.

Ms. Rollans then handed her child to a person at the scene and began to run, leaving Ms. Scriven, who had been injured in the collision.

Ms. Rollans, Ms. Scriven and the infant were taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital for treatment, Maj. Weaver said. They were in fair condition.

The driver of the other car, identified as Ann Foskey, 55, of Clark Street, was taken to University Hospital for treatment, police said, but was not believed to be seriously injured.

Give credit where due

How did this woman get the keys to the car ? Sounds fishy to me ...

doubt-it

How do we find adequate housing for these deserving Gilbert Manor residents?

Reality

I don't care what the details are, she left her baby there with someone else so she could run....She should be sterilized..

Shouldn't they charge her with abandonment of her child also?

Eagle_08

how could she do something like that....i once attended school with her and she's alwaysbeen trouble and robinette is a problem too...and her last name is rolland not rollans

Little Lamb

It would have been more complete if the Chronicle had given the name of the man who reported the car stolen. It sounds a bit fishy that he located the car on Dent Street, like maybe he know who stole his car and knew where to look for it.

And if George Bush was not president this never would have happened.

She and Brittney should get together. I think they'd make quite a duo!

i had the same thing happen to me,and they dont need the keys. i followed the thief until he realized that the other car in my drive way was behind him and he bailed out and ran.

Put her name on the list as the FIRST recipient of Section 8 for their new housing! I give the new "relocated" housing complex 6 months before it looks like the ones now.....I work very hard for what I have, in fact I pay a lot more in federal and state taxes than most households earn per year, and this kind of stuff makes me sick......But, oh I forgot, they "deserve" this new housing.....give me a break...

Throw the book at her.

People will feel sorry for the child and raise money to help take care of him and then she will live off that money. Giving her baby to a total stranger to run from the law..... She must have known the car was stolen - why else would she run?? Unless she had drugs in her possession. I hope this child never finds out that his own mother gave him to a stranger so she could run from the law because she was driving a stolen vehicle. They need to take the baby away from her and hopefully, he will never know her either.

sanders20

i blame it on the water..did she grow up next to OLIN?

Even if the guy knew who she was, the car could still be stolen. A crime doesn't have to be done by a stranger to be a crime. DFCS will give the child back after she goes to counseling...and jail. Better yet! The same mom who raised her will get to raise this one too! 18 years old with an 11-month old, hhmmmm.

She doesn't care one bit about anyone but her self , they should take her child away from her!!!

__B_ augusta lawyer is just pulling your chain. He knows it the fault of the Liberal with their entitlement programs. Did everyone see how charming and gracious Hillary was after the 3rd place finish. She was still playing her role. If she wins the nomination, it's gonna be fun!

If you anything nice to say, then you must talking about Hillary Clinton. : ) ....what that crazy, conceited lady, Ms. Roll-whatever, did is just plain sad. FROGGY OUT.

You all are a HOOT today. As for this "mother", she should be forced to live out in the cold frigid temperatures instead of given a jail cell. Warmth is something she needs to learn first, and that should work for her. Then she should be taught how to care for others. I would send her to work for those living IN the jail cells, while she lives OUTSIDE, just so she can get a handle on taking care of others. As for her kid, yea, Take the kid from her and tell that child that "mommy dearest" left him or her with total strangers cause she ran away from a crime scene and didn't care about anyone but herself. She will never get respect from that kid again!

vbost

DeborahElliott2 I doubt that she was ever worried about having the kid's respect --now the government check she gets for having him is a different story.

Lock her up--tie her tubes--and hopefully find the child a decent home to grow up in.
