Couple found shot to death in their home
CHARLESTON --- Authorities say a North Charleston couple have been found shot to death in their home along with their dog.
Officers found the bodies of 58-year-old Nancy "Theresa" Davis and 63-year-old Leslie "Ted" Davis Jr. on Wednesday afternoon. The coroner's office says both were shot, and an autopsy scheduled for Thursday should give investigators more information.
Neighbor Debbi Farrell says Ms. Davis found out she had cancer a year ago, but her health had improved until a few weeks ago, when she started saying she was not feeling well.
Suspects in killing turn themselves in
COLUMBIA --- Authorities say two men wanted in a Columbia apartment shooting death last week have turned themselves in.
Columbia police say the men were arrested Wednesday and have been charged with murder, kidnapping and first-degree burglary. Police say Melcelus O'Brian Toland went into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and shot her new boyfriend Dec. 29.
Authorities say 22-year-old Calvin Washington died at a hospital after he was shot. Authorities say Mr. Toland took the woman and her 6-year-old child to a nearby gas station after the shooting and left them there. Also charged is Andrew Lennard Brown.
Flames consume church sanctuary
GREER --- A fast-moving fire destroyed the sanctuary of a Spartanburg County church, bringing down its steeple.
The employees and construction crew inside escaped without injury when the Abner Creek Baptist Church caught fire Wednesday morning.
Church members say the buildings that burned were 40 to 50 years old. The church celebrated its 175th anniversary last September. A gymnasium adjacent to the church appeared to be spared. Investigators haven't determine what caused the fire.
Homeless man is hit by car on highway
ANDERSON --- A homeless man pushing a shopping cart was seriously injured when he was struck Wednesday night by a car at the junction of S.C. 28 Bypass and U.S. 29-Business, the Anderson Independent-Mail reported.
According to Lance Cpl. Kathy Hiles, of the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Quincy James Wideman, 36, of Anderson, was struck about 7 p.m. as he attempted to cross S.C. 28 Bypass. The driver, Tony Lamar Talley, 37, of Anderson, was driving a 1997 Plymouth Breeze and traveling west on S.C. 28 when Mr. Wideman was hit from the side, she said. Troopers took Mr. Talley into custody on an unrelated warrant in Spartanburg after the accident, Lance Cpl. Hiles told the newspaper.
