YOU
- Dress warmly and stay dry: wear a hat; a scarf or knit mask to cover your face and mouth; sleeves that are snug at the wrist; mittens (they are warmer than gloves); water-resistant coat and boots; and several layers of clothing.
- Cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart. If you have to do outdoor chores, dress warmly and work slowly. Remember, your body is already working hard just to stay warm, so don't overdo it.

YOUR PIPES
- Set the thermostat for at least 65 degrees since the temperatures inside the walls where pipes are located will be cooler
- Learn how to shut the water off, and know where pipes are located. Quickly shutting off pipes and directing plumbers to the problem can prevent pipes from bursting.
- Look closely for cracks and leaks. Wrap exposed pipes with heating tape or insulation sleeves for outside pipes.

YOUR PLANTS
- Bring in plants such as summer perennials, summer annuals and Chinese evergreens into the home or garage.
- If those plants are outside during freezing weather, place them next to the house or next to a structure.
- Or create a mini-greenhouse: Place a covering over the plant, then sustain the covering with bricks to create a warmer environment.

YOUR PETS
- Keep pets indoors when temperatures or wind chill are below 32 degrees.
- Protect pets from chilly weather by dressing them in sweaters.
- For outside pets, keep bedding such as hay in doghouses that retain heat.
- Put plastic material over the doghouse door to block wind from the pet.
