Moms fight for homes after sons are charged

CHARLESTON --- Five mothers raising children in public housing are fighting to keep their apartments after their sons were charged with armed robbery.

The women say they don't condone the behavior their young teens are accused of and have nowhere to go with their children.

"This is a situation where you've got good kids and one parent. That doesn't make us bad people," said Rushia Robertson, a single mother of seven children who is studying to be a nurse.

The Charleston Housing Authority's regulations say an entire family may be evicted if any individual resident is involved in serious criminal activity.

Mother, daughter die in crash on interstate

SPARTANBURG --- A woman and her daughter were killed and two brothers were injured in a collision on Interstate 85 near Gaffney.

Paulette Thomas Toussant, 44, and Veronica Lynne Toussant, 19, both of Fort Mill, were killed Friday when their car was hit by a Chevrolet Camaro that crossed through a cable barrier in the median, Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said.

Roy Anthony Evans, 20, and Raymond Alexander "Alex" Evans, 18, of Gaffney were in the Camaro. The older brother remained in serious condition Saturday night at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Cathy Roby-Williams said. Alex Evans, a redshirt freshman defensive lineman for The Citadel, was treated for minor cuts and released, according to a news release from The Citadel.

5 prison guards hurt in attack by inmates

BISHOPVILLE --- Five prison guards were injured after three inmates attacked one officer inside a maximum security prison, state prison officials said Saturday.

The officer who was attacked was taken to a nearby hospital and four others were treated at Lee Correctional Institution. None of the injuries were life-threatening, according to a news release from Corrections Department spokesman Josh Gelinas.

The officer was attacked about 11:30 Saturday morning and other officers went into the dormitory to help. The prison remained on lockdown Saturday.

Molestation suspect is released on bail

MOBILE, Ala. --- A South Carolina man accused of molesting a 5-year-old girl at his home in Daphne has been released on $15,000 bail after he surrendered to authorities.

Thomas Pinion, 56, was charged with first-degree sexual abuse and turned himself in to authorities at the Baldwin County Corrections Center.

Records at the jail in Bay Minette show Mr. Pinion, who surrendered Thursday, listed his address as Summerville, S.C.

Mobile lawyer James Vollmer is representing Mr. Pinion and said his client's wife is the former head of Bay Minette's CARE House and still lives in the area.
