Fighting injures principal

  • Follow Metro

A Richmond County principal was sent to the hospital Wednesday after suffering injuries when she tried to break up a fight that led to an early release of school, Superintendent Dana Bedden said.

Cross Creek High School Principal Lynn Warr was "slammed" into a wall and injured her back, knee and arm, Dr. Bedden said. She was treated at the emergency room of Trinity Hospital of Augusta and released.

Two male students were fighting, and one pulled out brass knuckles, Dr. Bedden said. When he did, the other stepped back, accidentally pushing Ms. Warr against the wall.

"The one thing is clear, no one intentionally tried to attack her," the superintendent said after speaking with students and parents.

Ms. Warr and other school personnel were trying to stop the students from fighting, Dr. Bedden said.

The sheriff's office was called, and one student was charged with a felony for bringing a weapon to school. The other was charged with fighting and disrupting school, he said. Both were released to their parents, and both were suspended pending a disciplinary tribunal.

Because students were "riled up" and the "adrenaline," Dr. Bedden decided to let school out early, he said.

Couple of things. First, Dr.

Couple of things. First, Dr. Bedden was informed that the principal was injured and being taken to the hospital. He IMMEDIATELY CAME TO THE SCHOOL. He gathered information from eye witnesses to the events. He was on-site and not in the ivory towers of Broad Street when a second altercation occured. He saw the frenzy of crowds of students running through the halls. He saw the concern of the faculty and staff. Anyone can second guess and armchair quarter back. It was the last day of school before the holidays, students were riled up, and he made the right decision for the safety of all students. Second, a tribunal must be held to expell a student from school, they can't just be thrown out. Last, a juvenile disrupting school will not be taken into custody. Our school administrators seem impotent when kids use profanities, disrupt, intimidate, threaten others, and they remain in school because parents wont or refuse to come for them and police wont transport. A strong message would be sent to all if law enforcement would remove out of control students from campus and parents were required to retrieve them from a detention facility; preferably with a fine. Merry Christmas!

Just a few thoughts on these

Just a few thoughts on these comments...with 1600 students, letting the students go home early was the right thing to do because of the potential of more fights breaking out in retaliation.

Concerned 200 7 thinks the

Concerned 200 7 thinks the teacher should have just left them alone and let them beat on each other. One could easily have been beaten to death by the one with the brass knuckles. Then Concerned would have been screaming for the teachers head for letting them fight without stepping in. There is no pleasing these irresponsible, excuse-making people. ..I fail to see why these troublemakers attend school. They can't be interested in learning anything. The schools shouldn't have to be day-care, juvenile detention centers for offenders.

I used to teach in the public

I used to teach in the public schools and never tried to break up a fight. Not my job. It's security's job. Too dangerous for me. That's why I got out of it. Had a teacher friend who has a scar on her arm because she tried to stop a fight between two girls. One had a box cutter and ripped the teacher's arm open.

Good grief! Give Dr. Bedden

Good grief! Give Dr. Bedden a break? Many seem to expect miracles in less than a year. He was there, you know where his money comes from and where it goes. Is that not an improvement? Merry Christmas and "let it go".

School is a place for

School is a place for learning. The home is the place that discipline must start. Teachers are not substitute mothers/fathers. 16 year olds are not children. 16 year olds can and in my opinion, should be charged as adults when committing a crime. Punishment as an adult should be the norm. I'm not referring to a "one time" event, but to the "name constantly in ISS/OSS report or arrest report".

I feel that the parent (or parents) should share the punishment with the child. That might encourage the parent(s) to show a little more attention to their child.

crazy..No..I was told not to pull a gun if I wasn't going to use it and I know I would never use it, so I remain, undefended. I will have to rely on good law abiding citizens and police officers for my safety.

Before we begin to judge or

Before we begin to judge or voice our opinions, please let God direct our tongues. The same people who made comments have children or relatives. What would you have done if these children were yours? God has no respect of persons. There are educators out there who have children in the school system and with all of the home training and strict discipline enforced, some of them are still not performing well in school because of the choices that they make. These young children of today are smart but very weak. They do need guidance and support. The gentleman with the brass knuckles needs Jesus in hnis life and the other child. We are so quick to make a decision about Dr. Beden without counting the cost. I applaud him for any decision that he makes. It was not a bad idea to close school. It was the last day before break anyway. The leader was injured and more could have been. The students that you mentioned in the alternative school are all God's children. God has no greater Love for you than them. Thank God for Grandmamas. Maybe a grandmama should have had the babies that were just murdered. It is better to tie a millstone around your neck than to hurt one of God's little ones.Peace!!!
