Debutantes need more diversity

Did anyone notice something wrong with the recently published picture of the Augusta Symphony Cotillion debutantes? Why are there no blacks, Asians, Hispanics or other ethnic groups pictured?

Surely, wealthy white people are not the only ones who like the symphony. There are a lot of doctors, attorneys, business owners and military of ethnic groups, whose daughters would meet the same qualifications as the white debutantes.

In this new century, we should be working to accept all races and be integrated in all aspects of life. As an Irish/German-American, I hope next year the Augusta Symphony will have a representation of all of Augusta's races in its cotillion picture.

B.L. Calloway, Augusta

I dated a deb when in high

I dated a deb when in high school. She would come to my side of town (not the best) and pick me up in her buick convertible and didn't give a damn about my not having the money to own a car. These young ladies do come form wealthy families, who, by the way, are the ones who support the arts in Augusta, including the symphony. Some may not be the best looking gals in town (fat, skinny, etc) but have the buck backing them. I played in the symphony and am glad Augusta has one. I surely get tired of the red neck cuhunty west'en and rap crap on radio around here and am glad we have NPR with some decent, civilized music a few hours a day. Try NPR's "from the top" on sunday at one PM and hear some of the finest teenage musicians in the nation.

"Why are there no blacks,
Unpublished

"Why are there no blacks, Asians, Hispanics or other ethnic groups pictured?" Maybe because they have better sense than to be involved with this anachronistic crap!

I was a debutante in the so

I was a debutante in the so called "black cotillion" and both my junior and senior years we had other races. Do your homework before you speak. We didn't just come out. We were a group young ladies in an organization who grew and worked together in the community. The cotillion was the culminating event for the clubs's year. So there is a difference.
