'Golden Compass' sends wrong message

  • Follow Letters

Many families have the tradition of taking the children to a movie during the holidays. There have been many good ones over the years, but I would be amiss if I didn't warn against The Golden Compass .

Based on the book written by Philip Pullman, a confessed atheist, this is a satanic story, casting the church as the bad guy. This movie is advertised as a familyfriendly movie, but, in essence, it is a non-Christian movie portraying the church with sinister angels and a cruel God, whom a young girl is seeking to kill.

Atheism is becoming prevalent by slipping into innocent minds through television and novels supposedly championing the universal values of love, tolerance and curiosity. But these authors distort these values, embraced by Christianity, through fantasies with a satanic message.

The advertisements are enticing and the actors are beautiful. The story seems enchanting, but please be warned about The Golden Compass and other fantasy novels from this author.

Doris A. Jones, Augusta

How does satanic angles and a god that can be killed by a young girl relate to church? Sound like a fantasy story to me. Isn't this the same kind of letter we read about the Harry Potter stories? If you live your life by the movies, you're in more trouble then you know.

If they really want to put a true story about today's christianity in the movies, perhaps they could focus on child molestation, televangelists going to jail, and college presidents who live lavish lifestyles off the school's finances.

I think that in the case of

I think that in the case of the letter writer, she was admonishing parents to be concerned about exposing their children to this material. Although I have not seen this particular movie, I agree that we should be cognizant of the potential harm that may result. There may be certain artistic elements that may be inappropriate for children of a specific age or maturity level. Children in particular are influenced by all of the experiences they encounter growing up. And rightly so, since this is the way that learning and inculcation of mores and values occur. The younger the child, the less able they are to make the distinction between fact and fiction, right and wrong, and real and imaginary. I think that we may be naiive about the impact that certain visual images can have upon our children. As parents it is our responsibility to support the healthy physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development of our children. Making correct entertainment choices is part of good parenting. Although the film industry does place ratings on movies, parents know best what is approriate for their own children. Reading reviews by reliable sources will help in making wise decisions.

I recently read the same thing about this movie. Thank you for letting others know the content. If anyone wants to say 'what is the big deal?' keep asking that while reading the news of the latest shooting or atrocity being commented by a child on other children or adults.

Excuse me but the media does

Excuse me but the media does play a huge role in the behavior of children. They will turn to whatever makes them feel good. Children need structure not just role models that fill their minds with violence, death and pain without consequences. Taking God out of young lives leaves them open to attack from all sorts of demonic forces. If you think that is stupid just take a good look around. Parents have gotten so used to allowing movies, x-box games and other mindless junk babysit their children that they can not or will not pay attention to the behavior of their children until it is to late.

This movie is like so many

This movie is like so many aimed at children these days. It is a "promo" for books, games and toys to be purchased later. The last of the books ends with the characters "Killing God", who by the way way "nothing to start with". The future is in our children. Talking about "waste management". The fact that some ministers, churches and "faith based businesses fail to follow "God's Will" or even common decency, does not change the TRUTH of man's relationship with his Creator. Their actions and the comments by "God Haters" only add to the proof that ALMIGHTY GOD is Holy and man is sinful and in need of a Savior.

Parents that raise their children and influence them in positive ways won't lose them to a movie. One is a lifestyle and the other is a passing fantasy of little consequence other then entertainment. Only by excluding the first can the second have influence.

Why not expand our minds for

Why not expand our minds for a moment to consider new ideas? Why isn't God cruel? I imagine that you live comfortably in a Columbia county home and drive to church every Sunday. However, the vast majority of the world lives in poverty and fights with illness and hunger. Is this not cruel? And so our governor prays for rain so the Cobb county mansions can water their grass but we are no so concerned that the majority of the world does not have sufficient water resources for their survival. I think we need to open our eyes.

The subtly of the movie

The subtly of the movie makers is well known. It is not the fantasy of the movie that you should worry about, it is the desire to learn more about the books written by an author that is a known athiest. As you well know even the schools are reading the Harry Potter books, and as I do not agree with the "magic" of Harry Potter at least they were not written by an athiest and religion is not involved. What will our children learn from reading books written by an athiest? As parents we should be concerned about what our children are absorbing in print. I for one am concerned about this movie and appreciate Ms. Jones letter.

Yes, let's censor all atheist

Yes, let's censor all atheist authors. All atheist screen writers as well. All atheist politicians. Let's all send our kids to college at Oral Roberts University where they can truly learn good christian values. Values should be taught by parents, not movies. If you see the movie with your children, that could actually be a good opportunity to discuss the movies message and your childs understanding. Sheltering your children from the world is an excercise in futility. Teach them good values and let them live.

What's wrong with Atheism,

What's wrong with Atheism, because we don't subscribe to your kingdom. All religion is idol worship of false prophets. It has been my experience that the majority of holy rollers think that they can sin all week and beg forgiveness on the weekends and all is alright. Why not just live a good life so you don't have to ask forgiveness. If this author is a true atheist he doesn't believe in satanic worship. Most people I have experienced are either inherently good or bad, there is very little grey areas in between. Idol worship has started more wars on this planet than any other idea, and just to impose their ideas on others. If you want to practice your idol worship, do it in the privacy of your home and church, it doesn't belong here.

I just want to say that I had

I just want to say that I had this conversation with my ex-husband list night because I am letting my son read all three of this authors book. Please......It is just a fiction book. I agree with shivas, talk to your kids and discuss the message. It seems in this neck of the woods atheists are devil worshippers...such narrow minded ppl....geesh. If you are atheist then you do not believe in heaven, hell, God or the devil. It is just a book. What ever happen to Reading is Fundamental? Are you going to tell your children do not read and never expand their minds?

There are a lot of things

There are a lot of things that I DO NOT want to expand my children's minds -- drugs, alcohol, pornography, etc. There are even so-called "Mind expanding drugs" out there, but that does not mean I want my kids to try them. Parents must filter what goes into the minds of their kids as best we can. Call it sensorship or whatever you like. Truth is, it's just being a good parent. "Why not live a good life so you don't have to ask forgiveness?" Interesting comment. Never met a perfect person before, other than Aftbrn, I guess. By the way, who judges what is "good"? Aftbrn? Phillip Pullman? The writers making these comments? Seems the fundamental question is that we're all trying to find some standard of absolute goodness and truth upon which to stand. We'll probably disagree about what this may actually be, but the pursuit of this absolute truth appears to be common to all.

I appreciate the information.

I appreciate the information. Had it not been pointed out, I would have believed this movie was another 'Chronicles of Narnia' or 'Harry Potter'. I had first been made aware of this in Sunday School. Last week there was an AP article about this and I was surprised that the author came straight out and said that he hopes to 'undermine the Christian faith'.

Do what you want, but just be aware of the underlying message. As for me and mine, we didn't watch 'Harry Potter' nor the 'Chronicles of Narnia' and we certainly won't be watching this either.

I don't think anyone is trying to censor what you watch, they just want to make sure you make an informed decision. If someone didn't warn the sheep about the wolf in the wool, they'd all be mutton! And yes, I am a sheep and I proudly follow the Lamb of God.

If you have a strong

If you have a strong foundation in your faith; then it's just a movie, watch it for two hours, then go home. My 13 year old teaches her Sunday School Class, she has read all three books in this series and laughed at the comments and big deal being made. To quote her - it's like playing a record backwards, you are going to hear what you want to hear. Take it with a grain of salt.

Good thing the deity that

Good thing the deity that gets killed in the G.C. is not Allah (or even Mohammed). If that were the case, there'd be some terrible reprocussions huh? If just naming a teddy bear "Mohammed" is worthy of capital punishment, imagine what a movie calling for the death of Allah could do.... But again, it's OK to kill the Christian God. That's just being tolerant and expanding our minds.
