MARTINEZ, Ga. - Mr. John "J.J." Julian Phillips, Jr. 65, affectionately known as "Paw Paw," beloved husband of Mrs. Nancy Garrett Phillips, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Doctors' Hospital. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at New Hope Worship Center with the Rev. Rich Bowen officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Dillan Patterson, Eryc Riddle, Donnie Stafford, Phillip Tully, Garrett Black, and Christopher Black. Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Black, Danny Garrett, Tommy Garrett, David Reeves, Ricky Shanks, and Troyce Harmon. Mr. Phillips was born in Nashville, Tenn. but he lived all of his life in the Augusta area. Graduating from Richmond Academy, he then went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force. After his military service and during his career, Mr. Phillips owned and operated Southeastern Compressor Works. He worked at the Savannah River Plant as a union Welder. In 1990, he became a Truck Driver. In 2002, he went to Iraq as a Truck Driver, delivering supplies to the military troops deployed there. He recently came back out of retirement and was employed by Bennett Motor Express at John Deere. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved to drive the carpool on Monday afternoon. He will be greatly missed by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife; daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Brad Patterson; son and daughter- in-law, Scott and Dorinda Phillips; three grandchildren, Dillan Bradford Patterson, Taylor Elaine Patterson, and Megan Phillips Page (Jason). The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Monday evening at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 4255 Columbia Road, Martinez.
