If you've taken a stroll down Laurens Street in downtown Aiken, you might have noticed a couple of dressed-up, jolly old ladies sitting on a bench in front of Tea Garden Gifts. Eula and May came to Aiken from Mississippi eight years ago, and have since reached local celebrity status.
Shop owner, Cathy Bland, describes them as the guests that never leave and she's happy to have them.
"People love them," she says. "I get calls all the time from people asking, 'Are the ladies out today?' "
Passers-by can't help but stop and take another look. Some take out their cameras and pose for photos with them.
"I've got so many e-mails from people who were passing through town and they send me pictures," Ms. Bland said.
Their smiling faces have been seen on a billboard advertising Aiken. They've even been invited to functions.
"They're getting a little old now, so we're trying to limit their outings, but they've been to grand openings, Christmas parties, golf tournaments and even the Steeplechase Ball."
If you hang out with "the ladies" for a short time, you can't help but notice all the attention that they get. Their carefree demeanor draws you in, making you want to be a part of their conversation.
As far as town gossip goes, the ladies probably know more than most local residents. "They can tell you everything that goes on around Laurens Street," Ms Bland said. "I think they should write a book."
