Fundraiser has new look

Red kettles and bell ringers in front of area stores are one of the most recognized fundraisers for The Salvation Army, but this year, the fundraising also goes online.

"The online kettle is something that The Salvation Army has had for a few years, but this is the first year that The Salvation Army in Augusta has provided online kettles. This gives them another option," said Laurie Harmon, the assistant development director of The Salvation Army.

In addition to the online kettles, the organization is sponsoring a contest for people who create their own online kettle.

The person raising the most money in their online kettle as of 3 p.m. Nov. 15 will receive two tickets to the Thanksgiving Day football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Jets in Dallas and a VIP package, which includes airfare to and from Augusta, two nights' accommodations and Thanksgiving dinner at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium Club.

"It's an easy way to give to the Salvation Army. All the money raised from the contest will be used for the Augusta Salvation Army," Ms. Harmon said.

She hopes they can raise at least $10,000 through the contest.

The online kettle fundraiser will continue through Dec. 21. The traditional kettles will begin appearing throughout the area Friday and remain out until Dec. 24.
