It took a lot of knocking on doors, but Joe Jackson knocked out his four opponents without the need for a runoff in District 6.
Mr. Jackson said he made a promise when he began his campaign to knock on as many doors as he could, and he credited that in helping him win Tuesday night. With all but a handful of provisional ballots counted, the 36-year-old locksmith had nearly 60 percent of the vote.
His 1,355 votes trumped those received by second-place candidate Rosa Clemons, who had 387 votes.
"I feel honestly the voters came out and supported me for who I am," Mr. Jackson said. "We need to get rid of the stagnant waters and move forward."
And that means marketing the city and improving the sheriff's office, he said.
"We need to provide for our deputies. We will have to give them the money they need," Mr. Jackson said.
Deputies need raises, and although he isn't sure how those raises will be funded, he said he is confident commissioners will come up with something.
Coming in third was Tony Lewis, followed by Juanita Burney and Elmer Singley.
