Headline obscures success of schools
Letter to the Editor
Wednesday, November 07, 2007

I was disappointed in the headline of an article written by Julia Sellers. The headline read, "Schools fail by federal grades" (Oct. 31). This is misleading, and makes it appear that all schools failed when, in fact, 19 Aiken County and three Edgefield County schools did meet 100 percent of their goals.

Does the public realize that if one goal is not met, the school fails? That is a very difficult task.

Some of the items that chart "adequate yearly progress" are totally out of the control of the schools, such as student attendance. That is controlled by parents.

It's time to be more positive about the good things that are happening in the schools, and give those that are succeeding good headlines!
