Evan Almighty Special
Special
Evan Almighty

ON DVD

RELEASED: Oct. 9

MPAA RATING: PG

THE PLOT: In this family comedy, Evan Baxter (Steve Carell) is a new congressman from New York. He is living a self-centered, selfish life when, at the prompting of his wife, he prays to God to help him make a difference. The next day, God (Morgan Freeman) suddenly appears to him and tells him to build an Ark like Noah because there will be another flood. Evan tries to ignore the call to build the boat, until he starts looking like Noah (white hair and a long beard) and animals appear to him in twos.

THE VERDICT: I enjoyed this film because the ending was unpredictable. However, at times the special effects were cheesy. This a film that people of all ages will enjoy.

'Mr. Brooks'

ON DVD

RELEASED: Oct. 23

RATED: R

THE PLOT: Mr. Brooks (Kevin Costner) is the perfect father, husband and businessman -- or is he? At the start of the movie, Mr. Brooks receives the Businessman of the Year award. But he has a very dark secret -- he is the infamous "Thumbprint Killer." Mr. Brooks' alter ego, Marshall (William Hurt), constantly makes Mr. Brooks suffer to the point that he feels he has to kill. But a night of murder leads to blackmail by a photographer (Dane Cook), and a very determined detective, Tracy Atwood (Demi Moore), is trying to catch the killer.

THE VERDICT: As an avid Kevin Costner fan, I enjoyed Mr. Costner bypassing his normal role of nice guy next door to play a closet serial killer. There is plenty of suspense throughout the movie. Mr. Hurt's constant attempts to intertwine the two personalities keeps you wondering which will win out. Demi Moore isn't very believable as a detective.

GRADE: B-
