Women's club event could help those who like to do holiday shopping early

The October meeting of the Aiken Christian Women's Club will be a good place to get a head start on Christmas shopping.

"Oct. 23 is our annual country fair," said Dolores Tillman, the club chairwoman. "It's a fundraiser to support our ministry."

Christmas items, baked goods, and arts and crafts will be available from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. at the fair, which will precede the regular luncheon meeting. There will also be a live auction.

The regular meeting will be from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Woodside Plantation Country Club.

Martha Frickie, of Decatur, Ala., will be the featured speaker.

For 30 years, the Aiken Christian Women's Club has provided a way for women to "connect with each other and connect with the Lord," Ms. Tillman said.

The club is an affiliate of Stonecroft Ministries, headquartered in Kansas City, Mo. It is a nondenominational group.

Attendance at the meetings varies widely depending on the event, she said.

Last month, there were 64 people, and more than 100 attended in August.

"We're looking forward to a big crowd," Ms. Tillman said of the country fair.

The cost of the luncheon is $15, which may be paid at the door; however, advance reservations are necessary. Free child care is available.

Ms. Tillman said many working women are unable to attend meetings because they are held during the day, but the November meeting will accommodate these women. It will be at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Aiken Municipal Center.
