APPLING, Ga. - Joan E. Bennett, of Appling, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, September 23, 2007 at Westwood Extended Care in Evans, Georgia. Joan was born on July 12, 1930 in Star, Mississippi to the late Elmer J. and Vivian Murray. A funeral service will be at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Columbia Road Chapel, 2 p.m., Thursday, September 27 with Rev. Roy McVeigh officiating. Interment will follow in Bellevue Memorial Gardens. She married her sweetheart, Guy S. Bennett, on March 15, 1949, who preceded her in death on May 20, 1995. She is survived by four children, three sons and a daughter, Guy M. Bennett and wife Jane, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Gary G. Bennett and wife Mickie, of Martinez, Ga., Ralph O. Bennett and wife Donna, of Easley, S.C., and daughter, Vivian Carol Carteret and husband Johnny, of Appling, Ga. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews throughout the United States. She was preceded in death by granddaughter, Wendy Carol Carteret; grandson, Matthew Travis Bennett; and great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Paige Van Tassel; as well as brothers, William Murray and E. J. (Jack) Murray; and sister, LaNell Costantini. Our beloved Mom, Grandma, Great-Grandma/G.G., and Aunt "Joanne" will forever be loved and missed. She was a lifelong resident of the Augusta area. Joan traveled to and lived in different countries around the world in support of her husband as a military wife with a career in nursing. She was actively involved for a number of years with the Columbia County Historical Society and Shiloh Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star.
