Hamlin, who's competing for the Nextel Cup championship, closed quickly on Petty's Dodge on the 205th lap, then knocked him into the frontstretch wall. Both cars were heavily damaged, and that set up a confrontation in the garage area as their teams tried to make repairs.
Replays seemed to defend Petty's claim that Hamlin was of control. Hamlin's crew chief, Mike Ford, told Hamlin a couple times before the accident to calm down, once telling is driver to think about the "big picture."
Hamlin, who finished in 38th, continued to blame Petty.
"The biggest thing is that I know Kyle gets run over a lot and a lot of the reason is that he's so far off the pace," he said.
