Housing board targeted

  • Follow Metro

At least two city commissioners don't want to stop with the resignation of Dave Barbee from the Augusta Housing Authority board. They took aim Tuesday at the entire authority and Executive Director Jake Oglesby.

Commissioners Marion Willliams and Calvin Holland led the charge to discuss the e-mail, defeating Mayor Deke Copenhaver's attempt to head off further discussion on grounds that Mr. Barbee has resigned.

"I think the community has been through this enough," the mayor said. "I would like to see it recommended we go ahead and recall this item."

"You can pull what you want to, Mr. Mayor, but this is an agenda item I placed on there, and I plan to talk about it," Mr. Williams said.

Not talking about it would be a slap in the face of the community and would suggest that commissioners were in support of Mr. Barbee's e-mail, he said.

"We as elected officials need to know where the housing director stands," Mr. Williams continued. "Jake Oglesby."

Mr. Barbee's Aug. 27 e-mail to developer brothers Clay and Braye Boardman concerning the evacuation of the Gilbert Manor housing project made a reference to making downtown whiter. It was widely disseminated and sent to the mayor by state Sen. Ed Tarver, who is the housing authority attorney, with a suggestion that the mayor ask Mr. Barbee to resign. The mayor did so, and Mr. Barbee resigned Sunday.

Commissioner Don Grantham said that the housing authority board was appointed by the mayor and that when Mr. Barbee's e-mail was brought to the mayor's attention, he took action.

"This commission doesn't really have anything to do with that board," Mr. Grantham said. He said the issue has been addressed.

Commissioner Calvin Holland disagreed, adding that when items referencing the people of the city hit the news media, officials have a responsibility to respond.

"Although Mr. Barbee has stepped down, which is good," he said, "the mayor has addressed this, which is good, we know that Mr. Barbee did not sit down and type up this message to himself. There were others involved with this particular e-mail, and for some reason or another this is going to come up again."

Mr. Holland said Mr. Barbee had violated the regulations and guidelines of the authority and he thinks Mr. Oglesby and the other board members were aware and should be held accountable.

The official vote to delete Mr. Williams' item from the agenda failed on a 5-1 vote with three abstentions. Only Mr. Williams voted no. A commission action requires six votes for passage.

Mr. Williams directed City Clerk Lena Bonner to put the discussion of the e-mail on the next commission agenda.

I guess the honeymoon period has ended for our illustrious prince Deke. The once beautiful prince has turned into a horrid ogre.

Amazing how a lot of narrow

Amazing how a lot of narrow minded people on here turn everything into a Black -V- White issue. You all talk about Williams but most of you have the same mentality that he has.

rcr...i beg to differ. i can

rcr...i beg to differ.
i can at least articulate the language, and i have enough sense to see that mr. barbee was merely pointing out what could happen (you know-throw a red flag;a warning;do you get this picture, etc.?) if -i repeat- if this move and subsequent changes were to take place . he never said he wanted it to happen, never said it should happen.
so...who's stupid...? you are.
yes blacks are by and large an inconvenience....free lunch, free transportation, ebt cards, free after school, and on and on.the major percentage of people on the dole are black, some for decades....yes quite inconvenient...if you're footing the damn bill that is.
as far as being lowlife trash, that's the kind of rapier sharp wit i would expect from you,i'm just disappointed you didn't say it ebonically, you know like "you's a fool"...or " you dun loss yo' mine"
well there are no more stupid people than the ones who can't read an e-mail from a respected public servant like mr. barbee and comprehend it's real meaning.
the problem i have now is what the hell was in it for the boardman's and why the hell deke copenhaver is turning into a spineless painty- waist.
understand yet? didn't think so.

Barbee is gone now. They

Barbee is gone now. They should let this issue go with him. There shouldn't have been a big deal made about it during the commission meeting because he resigned. Placing this on the agenda for next week is a waste of time. There are more important things that need to be discussed. If anything, the real issues about Gilbert Manor, revitalization, crime, and the general image of the city need to be addressed instead of beating the proverbial dead horse now known to some as emailgate. I don't think that continuing to fuss about it is productive. If they want to argue, let them at least argue over a living issue like the proposed canal or something. I don't think I've heard anyone mention race with that proposal so it might be a good distraction from having to always talk about bigotry and prejudice.

Well said KingJames, you saved me some writing time again and said it better than I was going to. I hope that some day Augusta is a place you would like to come back to and encourage your friends to visit, even retire, here.

Holland and Williams, The

Holland and Williams,
The situation is over with, and let it go. Propose something for the good of the community and work to get six votes.
It is time out for both of you---We want leaders not mess stirrers. We have had enough of both of you !

Those who like to stir and

Those who like to stir and smell stink should keep this in mind: If you stir up trash, it will get in your eye; and if you play with a dog, he will lick you in the mouth. Being in the middle of controversy isn't healthy for one's reputation. One may become known as an agitator whose only goal is to distract from issues of substance. With that said, how can one talk about a particular race as if that race is ignorant, and in the same breath display their own ignorance? "when sevceral of their own should have been sent kicking their lonch box , or chicken box , down the road. attention augusta shoppers....blue lite special....crying towels on aisle 8...." There are several misspelled words (several, lunchbox), punctuation errors (needless space between a word and a comma), and wrong word usage (lite means few, small or low; and light means electromagnetic radiation that may be perceived by the human eye). There are more, but I think you all understand my point.

So when is Wayne Howard going

So when is Wayne Howard going to be taken to task, he is the one who really started the whole mess. He is concerned that dilution of any votes from his district might cause his seat to be folded into surrounding districts after the 2010 census is taken. The reality of Augusta's shrinking population is that new lines will be drawn in 2012 and a house seat may be lost in Atlanta. Furthermore, Augusta will very likely drop from being the second largest metro area in Georgia to third possibly fourth place behind Columbus and Savannah.

I guess Calvin Holland isn't

I guess Calvin Holland isn't going to start squawking about the gang problems until they are in his neighborhood. Oh wait! Too late. They've been there at least since 1999! Just two blocks away in almost every direction. Has anybody done a stick pin map of where all the murders, solved and un-solved in 30906 have happened in the last five years? I'd sure like to see it. There are some other statistics I'd like to see, but they wouldn't be politically correct.

I think Rev.? Marion Williams

I think Rev.? Marion Williams & Mr. Calvin Holland have turned themselves into daily jokes in Richmond County and need to leave public office before they further embarass themselves,The Comission and the people of Richmond County. They are now trying to rid The Housing Authority of members they don't like and repalce them with their own hand picked candidates. SHAME ON YOU!

[After reading the

[After reading the Declaration of Independence] Now, you're not gonna have a country that can make these kind of rules work, if you haven't got men that have learned to tell human rights from a punch in the nose. [The Senate applauds] It's a funny thing about men, you know. They all start life being boys. I wouldn't be a bit suprised if some of these Senators were boys once. And that's why it seemed like a pretty good idea for me to get boys out of crowded cities and stuffy basements for a couple of months out of the year. And build their bodies and minds for a man-sized job, because those boys are gonna be behind these desks some of these days. And it seemed like a pretty good idea, getting boys from all over the country, boys of all nationalities and ways of living. Getting them together. Let them find out what makes different people tick the way they do. Because I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness and a - a little lookin' out for the other fella, too...That's pretty important, all that. It's just the blood and bone and sinew of this democracy that some great men handed down to the human race, that's all. But of course, if you've got to build a dam where that boys camp ought to be, to get some graft to pay off some political army or something, well that's a different thing. Oh no! If you think I'm going back there and tell those boys in my state and say: 'Look. Now fellas. Forget about it. Forget all this stuff I've been tellin' you about this land you live in is a lot of hooey. This isn't your country. It belongs to a lot of James Taylors.' Oh no! Not me! And anybody here that thinks I'm gonna do that, they've got another thing comin'. (He whistles loudly with his fingers in his mouth, startling Senators who are dozing or reading other materials) That's all right. I just wanted to find out if you still had faces. I'm sorry gentlemen. I-I know I'm being disrespectful to this honorable body, I know that. I- A guy like me should never be allowed to get in here in the first place. I know that! And I hate to stand here and try your patience like this, but EITHER I'M DEAD RIGHT OR I'M CRAZY.

Doesn't Holland have a mind

Doesn't Holland have a mind of his own? He's Marion Williams puppet. That'll teach us to listen to campaign promises. Holland needs to find a better friend to hang with. When you fail to address the problems of your district you find "done deals" to argue about. Those two need to do something constructive and quit being so destructive and get on with their job as our elected officials. It is the responsibility of the voters to hold the officials to account.

i was in a hurry and typos

i was in a hurry and typos are not usually equated with ignorancxe,,,,most people understand a typo is what it is....nothing more ,nothing less.

now,oh wise one...explain the real substance as to why and how people of your race continue to blindly support ignoramuses like williams and holland, and are so petty as to think the resignation od a public servant like barbee will improve their lot?
all it has done is steel my resolve that by and large the black race has one hand out for the freebies people like me(taxpayer) provide, and in the other they hold a knife to stab you in the back....not real smart in my book.
barbee died for the sins of williams, holland, etc., but you can bet their day is coming, and i willcelebrate their downfall like a national holiday,
king james.....when you have a reply, fire away.
i'll try to at least take a deep breath before i respond so as to keep the typos to a minimum, but you damn well remember one thing....the ignorance of your people is what's holding them back, not mine.

Mr. Barbee's resignation

Mr. Barbee's resignation should have ended all of the back and forth mess. Mr. Holland and Mr. Williams need to get on with their lives and strop stirring up unnecessary mess. They had no problems with the Housing Authority and Jake before now, so why now????
