Housing board targeted

  • Follow Metro

At least two city commissioners don't want to stop with the resignation of Dave Barbee from the Augusta Housing Authority board. They took aim Tuesday at the entire authority and Executive Director Jake Oglesby.

Commissioners Marion Willliams and Calvin Holland led the charge to discuss the e-mail, defeating Mayor Deke Copenhaver's attempt to head off further discussion on grounds that Mr. Barbee has resigned.

"I think the community has been through this enough," the mayor said. "I would like to see it recommended we go ahead and recall this item."

"You can pull what you want to, Mr. Mayor, but this is an agenda item I placed on there, and I plan to talk about it," Mr. Williams said.

Not talking about it would be a slap in the face of the community and would suggest that commissioners were in support of Mr. Barbee's e-mail, he said.

"We as elected officials need to know where the housing director stands," Mr. Williams continued. "Jake Oglesby."

Mr. Barbee's Aug. 27 e-mail to developer brothers Clay and Braye Boardman concerning the evacuation of the Gilbert Manor housing project made a reference to making downtown whiter. It was widely disseminated and sent to the mayor by state Sen. Ed Tarver, who is the housing authority attorney, with a suggestion that the mayor ask Mr. Barbee to resign. The mayor did so, and Mr. Barbee resigned Sunday.

Commissioner Don Grantham said that the housing authority board was appointed by the mayor and that when Mr. Barbee's e-mail was brought to the mayor's attention, he took action.

"This commission doesn't really have anything to do with that board," Mr. Grantham said. He said the issue has been addressed.

Commissioner Calvin Holland disagreed, adding that when items referencing the people of the city hit the news media, officials have a responsibility to respond.

"Although Mr. Barbee has stepped down, which is good," he said, "the mayor has addressed this, which is good, we know that Mr. Barbee did not sit down and type up this message to himself. There were others involved with this particular e-mail, and for some reason or another this is going to come up again."

Mr. Holland said Mr. Barbee had violated the regulations and guidelines of the authority and he thinks Mr. Oglesby and the other board members were aware and should be held accountable.

The official vote to delete Mr. Williams' item from the agenda failed on a 5-1 vote with three abstentions. Only Mr. Williams voted no. A commission action requires six votes for passage.

Mr. Williams directed City Clerk Lena Bonner to put the discussion of the e-mail on the next commission agenda.

Marion, there is no need for further discussion, adding additional times to the meeting. If something was amiss at the housing authority that you are aware of, it should have been brought up at an appropriate time. Deke took swift action. Let that be that for now, okay?

Holland was able to defend

Holland was able to defend himself for his hard drive escapades, Barbee never got the chance. I hope Dave leads the charge to unconsolidate Richmond County! The good news in all this is as long as there are rocket scientists like Williams and Holland on the commission, property values in Columbia County will continue to rise.

Oh, please move to Columbia

Oh, please move to Columbia County. Then you can move to Lincoln when Columbia gets urbanized, then on to the mountains of north ga. Before long you can become a Canadian citizen. To imply that the Augusta Commission is causing people to leave RC is a reflection on the citizenry rather than this commisssion. Run for office if you want to see change, or involve yourself in the political process. You folks are a bunch of sniveling whiners and complainers who would rather run away to Columbia County than participate in the process of making thier own community a better place to live. Have fun in the sterile environment that is Columbia County!

Igdoits! The Commission is an elected body. YES, it do have something to do with the housing board. Grantham speaks about what he and others WISH were the case: not what is actually true. Race matters. The board has been operating illegally by influencing housing policy. Olgesby must express the board's view of the e-mail. And Tarver should have sent the e-mail to law enforcement, because of federal housing regulation violations. Where is the DA?

Shivas, I have lived in

Shivas, I have lived in Columbia County for over 20 years and have been more involved in the political process than you can ever imagine. The problem all the sourrounding counties have, both in Georgia and South Carolina is that we feel like we are in a lifeboat that is chained to the Titanic. Despite our best efforts, we are destined to be dragged to the bottom by the shipwreck that is Richmond County. Please tell me when Barbee was offered the opportunity, all I remember is grandstanding by Quicny Murphy and his cohorts, and by the way he conveniently forgot to invite Barbars Sims to a last minute delagation meeting and their followup press conference. Last I checked she was a member of the Richmond County delagation, and by the way is your only remaining link to the republican leadership (the budget) in Atlanta.

A little different topic for

A little different topic for discussion. From the article above,, "The official vote to delete Mr. Williams' item from the agenda failed on a 5-1 vote with three abstentions. Only Mr. Williams voted no. A commission action requires six votes for passage." Now, in a strange ruling in a lawsuit filed by Woody Merry, Judge Overstreet ruled that the city charter gives the mayor the authority and power to count the abstention votes any way he wishes. Unfortunately, the cowardly (takes the easy way out every time) mayor Copenhaver has yet to use this power. Yesterday, he could have counted the abstentions as "yes" votes, taken the item off the agenda, and gaveled Holland and Williams to shut up. It's time to use the power he has to make these meetings become more useful to the citizens.

Williams & Hollands' antics

Williams & Hollands' antics are a prime example of why Augusta-Richmond County government is in a gridlock. Rehashing moot issues ... for what? Attention? Who is foolish enough to take their eyes off of them? Redress? The target, Barbee, has resigned no further reprimand or punishment is due. Maybe they want to flesh-out other personally, undesired Housing Authority members while the iron is hot? A personal vindetta. I have a challenge for either or both of these "civic leader" replications. E-mail me for an agreed upon public location & I, the POFWE will put you or ya'll across my knee & spank their brown behinds until their eyes are red. Our Mammas' (theirs & mine), would approve. This how you treat kids that won't behave.

Shivas is part of the

Shivas is part of the delusional problem people in Richmond County. The worst thing to ever happen to Richmond County was to merge with the city. It was a sinking ship and its only hope to stay afloat was to sucker Richmond County into bailing it out. I have lived in Augusta for over 20 years and ever since the consolidation, Richmond county has gone down hill and its because of greedy time-wasting fools like Marion Williams. There have been many that have tried to make a difference but as long as you have people willing to put the likes of a Marion Williams in place and continue to play everyhting as a white/black game progress will be stifled. What I have seen is the housing authority trying to place Gilbert Manor in a better area but it seems folks don't wnat that(Black or White). Maybe we need to look at that new TV show where they let the Kids run the town, at least then when they behave like Marion we would expect it. Form what I have seen from the younger generation they seem to see less black and white anyway. I only hope the older generation doesn't mess that up for them.

You Know I and I am sure a lot of folks are just too sick and tired of this situation............Augusta has the disadvantage of being held hostage by ignorance and bigotry from the older black people who can't get past the past. I say once and for all let them have it....let the city rot under them....let their children grow up in the mess they have made. williams and holland you win.... your people can wallow in the cesspool you have created.

Thankfully, we only have a few months left, of Marion Williams. We can only hope that his replacement will be more amiable, and more willing to make things better. And Shivas, Mr. Barbee did NOT have a chance to defend himself. The mayor did not even meet with him to discuss, before requesting his resignation. You also have to remember that he is now a Boardman -- by marriage. Deke has not been the Mayor I had hoped for.

Mr. Williams complains about

Mr. Williams complains about living 50 years in the past, seems to me that he is the only one and wants to drag the city back 50 years in the past. I have to ask myself how can that man look himself in the mirror and call himself a Reverand, a man of God. He is what I would interpret to be a false prophet. He claims to be a man of God but causes nothing but controversy on a daily basis and bring his own people down to his level which I don't see in line with Biblical living according to my Bible. Where are the real Christian leaders in this community? Maybe it is time this commission have monthly meetings with Christian leaders of both races to discuss issues in a Christian way. We have taken God out of everything possible and look where it has got us, a community of total hate and selfdistruction. And why should god bless us? I see the word hypocrite written all over the Augusta Commission. I am beginning to question our Mayor. A man of God would stand up for what is right, not give in to political antics. I hope when Mr. Williams asked for forgiveness the next time God doesn't say well let's keep your sin on the agenda for now, you are not forgiven!

There are a number of us that have worked for the Augusta Housing Authority for more than 10 years. Mr. Oglesby and our board members have treated all of us(employees) with great respect. Our residents and their children are given every opportunity to succed in life. The Housing Authority does a lot of wonderful things for children that never gets mentioned in the news. Mr. Oglesby and our board members should only be praised for the time and commentment they make to the Housing Authority, its residents, and its employees.

Thank you Mr. Oglesby!

Deke uses Dave Barbee to chum

Deke uses Dave Barbee to chum the waters to save face with the black folks, and with his inlaws, and now he wants the feeding frenzy to stop? Get real Deke. Get a spine for that matter. Watch Marion get the super district seat. We've not seen the last of this obstructionist bigot. Blacks are the majority in Richmond County now, but they're still getting minority status and protections. There are to many who mean to take advantage of this situation to seize total power. If I thought they intended any good, I probably wouldn't fuss. But, most of them seem to be lead by a racist agenda whose aim is to "pay back the white folks". They're not ashamed of it, and they don't hide it. It is openly discussed by preachers, politicians, the SCLC, and the NAACP in public forums routinely. Yet and still, guilt ridden, fear frozen citizens both black and white cover their eyes and plug their ears, as if ignoring this growing attitude will make it go away. Well it isn't going away, and it isn't getting better. Appeasing these people only gives them a better foot hold, and makes them that much bolder in their next attack. It seems our Mayor, like so many others hasn't figured this out yet. WAKE UP!

A little boy goes to his dad

A little boy goes to his dad and asks, "What is politics?"

Dad says, "Well son, let me try to explain it this way: I'm the breadwinner of the family, so let's call me capitalism. Your Mom, she's the administrator of the money, so we'll call her the Government. We're here to take care of your needs, so we'll call you the people. The nanny, we'll consider her the Working Class. And your baby brother, we'll call him the Future. Now, think about that and see if that makes sense,"

So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what dad had said. Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him. He finds that the baby has severely soiled his diaper. So the little boy goes to his parents' room and finds his mother sound asleep. Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny. He gives up and goes back to bed. The next morning, the little boy says to his father, "Dad, I thin k I Understand the concept of politics now." The father says, "Good son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about." The little boy replies, "Well, while Capitalism is screwing the Working Class, the Government is sound asleep, the People are being ignored and the Future is in deep poop."

Another topic from the article above: "Mr. Williams directed City Clerk Lena Bonner to put the discussion of the e-mail on the next commission agenda." Why? When the vote to take the "discussion" of the E-mail off the agenda failed, they discussed it yesterday. What more could they discuss next meeting? Do you think Williams will come to the meeting with motions to remove Executive Director Oglesby? Will he wish to remove all board members? Will he wish to remove only the white board members? Will he think he can convice the mayor to appoint board members that he (Williams) approves of?

Look what you have

Look what you have accomplished, Clay and Braye. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves. As if we don't have enough problems dealing with those record fools, Marion Williams and Calvin Holland. You guys, along with your boy Deke, gave them another club to beat the citizens with. This whole thing is sickening, especially the way you hung a good man and friend to this poor beleaguered city out to dry. Shame, shame, shame on you both, and on Deke. Williams and Holland are just doing what they always do, just like rats and bacteria, and probably are incapable of more intelligent actions. They have to be managed and contained, and you guys really screwed the pooch on that effort. This little incident really stands out against all the good you have done over the years, just like it has done to Dave Barbee's image.

If i remember correctly,

If i remember correctly, Holland started the issue by demanding that a city employee copy Fred Russell's hard drive, which ultimately led to him being censured by the commission. Williams took up the issue with his antics after that, only to reveal to the world that he does not know the difference between a hard drive and a web page.

Shivas, I realiz you are too ignorant to understand local politics unless some one spells it out for you, so here goes. Those people who are moving to Columbia County because RC's government is totally dysfunctional due to the likes of Holland and Williams. These same people who move no doubt, like I before I moved from RC, voted in MY district and could do nothng to remove the likes of Williams or Holland due to the gerrymandered (you can look tht one up) majority black voting districts. This latest is nothing more than more racist politics against whites, if not, then why hasn't the head of ANIC, who Dave Barbee was quoting, not been demanded to resign? Could it be because he is black? Ya' reckon?
