Statistics needed from area coaches

The Augusta Chronicle intends to publish weekly statistical leaders compiled from all of the area's 48 high school football teams.

Coaches are asked to submit statistics each week by fax to (706) 823-3408 or e-mail to jeff.sentell@augustachronicle.com.

Area leaders in kicking totals, interceptions, passing yards, punting average, rushing yards, receiving yards, sacks, tackles, tackles for loss and total touchdowns will be tracked.

The individual player statistics are due by noon Wednesday. Player of the week nominations will also be accepted until noon on Tuesday. There will be no exceptions. Call staff writer Jeff Sentell at (706) 823-3425 with any questions.

WNBA

Former teammates to meet in Game 5

Diana Taurasi and Swin Cash have won three championships together.

Today, one of them will add another in Auburn Hills, Mich.,

The college and Olympic teammates will face each other in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals. Cash and the Detroit Shock will be going for their third title in five seasons. Taurasi's Phoenix Mercury are looking for their first.

"We really have to be focused because their house is going to be crowded, and their players are going to be extra energized," said Taurasi, who, with Cash, won a pair of NCAA titles at Connecticut and gold medals in Athens. "We have to find a way to match that."

WOMEN'S WORLD CUP

Marta leads Brazil over host China

In Wuhan, China, FIFA player of the year Marta shimmied a loose ball past a diving goalkeeper and whipped another shot behind two defenders to lead Brazil to a 4-0 win over host China in the Women's World Cup.

- In Hangzhou, China, Australia substitute Lisa De Vanna scored in the 83rd minute to secure a 1-1 draw with Norway in Group C.

TENNIS

New mom Davenport wins, reaches final

In Nusa Dua, Indonesia, Lindsay Davenport advanced to the final of the Bali Open in her first singles tournament since having a baby in June.

Davenport cruised past Sara Errani 6-1, 6-3. In today's final, she will face second-seeded Daniela Hantuchova.

Upset spoils return of Rags to Riches

In New York, The filly phenom can be beaten after all.

Lear's Princess overtook Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches in the stretch and pulled off an upset in the $250,000 Gazelle Stakes at Belmont Park.

Rags to Riches is one of racing's most popular stars after becoming the first filly in 102 years to win the Belmont.

Martinez man is six back at Public Links

In Dacula, Ga., George Bullard, of Martinez, shot 75 in the first round of the Georgia Public Links Championship at Trophy Club of Apalachee.

Bullard is tied for 16th in the championship flight, six strokes behind overall leader Brent Sizemore, of Calhoun, Ga.

Two games on tap in Triple Crown tourney

Two games are scheduled today in the Triple Crown of Polo tournament at New Bridge Polo and Country Club.

New Bridge will take on Goose Creek at 10 a.m. and Brigadoon will face Tres Hijas at 5 p.m.

Myers scores twice to lead Lady Pacers

In Aiken, Jennifer Goodwin scored two second-half goals and Lauren Myers had three assists to help the USC Aiken women's soccer team (2-5-1) beat Chowan 4-1.
