The search to find the next president of Paine College has been narrowed to five finalists, none of whom work for the college.
In an e-mail sent to its alumni, Paine College announced that Dr. George Bradley, Dr. Algeania Freeman, Dr. Anita Jackson-Kelley, Dr. Lester Newman and Dr. Larry Palmer are the top picks to fill the position.
Little else is known about the finalists. When asked by The Augusta Chronicle for additional information on who the finalists are and how the process of selecting the president will work, a college spokesman said a search committee is handling all of the information.
Messages left for Dr. Eddie Cheeks, the chairman of the search committee, weren't immediately returned.
Each of the finalists began visiting the college Thursday for campus tours and sessions with faculty, staff and students. The sessions also give the Paine community a chance to give feedback on the finalists. The visits will continue through Sept. 21.
"I am (extremely) pleased with the quality of candidates who have applied for what is certainly a key position for this community as we move forward," Mayor Deke Copenhaver, a member of the search committee, wrote in an e-mail. "Paine college is undoubtedly one of Augusta's greatest assets in its role of providing for a well-educated work force."
He said he has confidence that any of the finalists can build upon the accomplishments of Dr. Shirley A.R. Lewis and take Paine to new heights.
Dr. Lewis, the college's first female president, retired at the end of June.
Dr. Curtis Martin has served as the college's interim president since Dr. Lewis' retirement.
