Churches calling for husband's suspension

ATLANTA - A national group of black and Hispanic churches wants the minister husband of evangelist and gospel singer Juanita Bynum suspended from the ministry because of allegations that he beat his wife.

Thomas W. Weeks III turned himself in to face charges that he beat and choked his wife during an argument outside an Atlanta hotel on Aug. 21.

Thomas W. Weeks III, known to his followers as Bishop Weeks, faces charges of aggravated assault and terroristic threats after a confrontation last month that police say left his estranged wife badly bruised.

The Washington-based National Black Church Initiative said that Mr. Weeks' Global Destiny Ministries is not part of its network but that it considers the domestic violence charges against him harmful to the body of Christian believers as a whole.

The coalition, which works to address racial health disparities and problems in the black family, said it sees Mr. Weeks' alleged actions as "morally wrong and reprehensible."

Domestic violence, the group said, is a root cause of the failure of black families and marriages.

The coalition also said it wants Mr. Weeks to apologize to his wife, his church and the Christian family and to seek counseling.

Police say that during an Aug. 21 argument outside a hotel Mr. Weeks, 40, choked Ms. Bynum, pushed her to the ground and started to kick and stomp on her. A hotel employee intervened and pulled Mr. Weeks away, police said.

Ms. Bynum, 48, is a former hairdresser and flight attendant who became a Pentecostal evangelist, author and gospel singer. Her ministry blossomed after she preached at a singles event about breaking free of sexual promiscuity. Among her books are No More Sheets: The Truth About Sex and Matters of the Heart. Her album A Piece of My Passion had been listed in the top 10 gospel albums by Billboard magazine for several months.

The couple married in 2002.

My confidence is in the Lord, not in preachers. If this man is honorable he will resign on his own.

It sounds like some of you

It sounds like some of you have had a bad experience with a preacher or preachers. You are right pofwe, preachers are like everyone else. They are human and because of that they will make mistakes. But don't give up on the MESSAGE that so many good ministers provide everyday, 24-7. You must hold on to your faith and be diligent in letting your light shine.

Navtive Augustan, he was

Navtive Augustan, he was charged because he left marks on her body. Had she left marks on his body, but there were none on her's, then the police may or may not have even been called; or if they were called, she should have been the one arrested. From what I read, Weeks became upset during their meeting and tried to leave. Bynum followed him out of the hotel, and that's when the altercation took place. Both Bynum and Weeks were wrong in how they handled this situation. She should not have followed him, especially when she knew he was upset. Weeks was correct in trying to leave, but when Bynum followed after him, he should have kept walking and not put his hands on her. Neither completely complied with what they should have done on that day. Action from the church needs to be taken against both of them, not just Weeks. I don't think they should be removed from any positions, but do feel that both need counseling and prayer. They were effective leaders prior to this and they can continue to be effective because they are going through what many of us go through, but don't talk about.

These damn megachurches has

These damn megachurches has gotten so out of order that every tom, dick and harpo can call themselves "bishop" and "prophetess" - I mean what kind of a seminary - or "cemetery" deem these folk to these titles!? Forget harming the "Body of Christ" as a whole, this tragedy blinds the world from who God really is - how do we expect to bring people of the world to Christ while we're soiled with the likes of Bishop Ike Turner here beatin up on Prophetess Annie Mae Bullock (who by the way had this coming for home-wreckin his first marriage with an affair with him before the grandoise royal wedding on TBN 3 years ago-no rumor folks!).

if this so called bishop had

if this so called bishop had any decency he would leave on his own.isn't it strange how we have so many wife/husband religious teams this day? i know many are called but few are chosen, but i doubt half of these shysters were called at all. check their credentials and i'll bet few ever have been any where near a seminary.they do it because people are desperate for salvation, and they can talk the talk and beat many out of their money.we have many so called prohets who pass through columbia, for a day or 2. i feel sorry for those who get swept up into this scam.the bible says a prophet is someone called by GOD TO BE HIS SPOKESMAN.many of these clowns were never called, but will answer one day, boy do i feel for them!

This man made a human mistake

This man made a human mistake and hear come the holier than thou crowd to torment the man more.As a Christian I am appalled and ashamed of this whole situation, but Jesus is LOVE and Forgiveness and if is our example then we should be reaching out to this fallen brother and not adding to an already stressful matter. The adversary doesn't have to persecute Believers when we're doing his job for him.Wake up people and let's pray for all those involved and ourselves.

King James I disagree with

King James I disagree with you this time. Rev. Weeks should have walked away from this situation. Hitting and stomping his wife is totally unacceptable.Their is no reason he can give for it.He should remove himself and seek counseling. Then after a reasonable period, apply for reinstatement and hope he is accepted back.

The "true church of the Lord

The "true church of the Lord Jesus Christ", not a denomination, must be judged, cleansed in the fire and purged of sin before it is ready for the return of Christ. All that is not of GOD will be shown for what it is truly founded upon. Religion can be anything. Case in point, the most Rev. C.A. Dollar. His religion is aquiring money. These new ager are following the footsteps of "Daddy Grace" and Father Devine". Offering a mix of scripture and sudo psychology, Feeling Good About Yourself at a seminar. They don't even bother to call it a "revival anymore or a saving crusade. Jim Baker got his "vision" while working for Pat Robinson. That vision was there is a lot of money to be made in religion. A true heartfelt desire to spend eternity with the GOD of the Bible and His Son Jesus are the test.

rcr...yeah right. here you go

rcr...yeah right. here you go again....anything remotely truthful about somebody black, which this guy was, and which sharpton is , has to be racist ,right?
tell you what....you show me one damn thing sharpton or anyone else of his ilk has done to help anybody in the street or promote anything or anybody but himself and i'll concede it to you.
this is a case of the truth hurts and you people can't stand to have to admit that the sharptons, jacksons, and others of their type do as much or more to spread racial disharmony as anyone on the planet.you have the grit to tell me i'm racist, get a life, and all sorts of crap...hey, write your boy al and tell him ...let him know he's a dinosaur and his "causes" are passe'-he needs to get on with his on damn life, like somewhere in a state of quiet obscurity.
i had a conversation with some older black gentlemen i know down on forsythe st. last saturday evening, and we were talling about the sharptons, marion williams and the rest of the posers, and to a man they all agreed none of them has ever done a damn thing for them...nothing. 'nuff said.

I think it was Serpico (the

I think it was Serpico (the ex-cop played by Al Pacino in the movie by the same name) who said it best. He said that when it comes to cops, 10% are totally clean and good, 10% are totally corrupt and the 80% leftover wish they could be like the first 10%. I think that principle could apply to a lot of professions, not the least of which is the ministry. So don't bother to politicize or racialize this story because people are people regardless of race, religion, profession or political affiliation. Recognize that people do dumb things and mess up their lives, then forgive them and move on without passing judgment. This doesn't excuse the behavior, mind you --- no sin is excusable, but every sin is forgivable. You may not believe it, but that could have been you making those same dumb mistakes.

belapris, I heard something

belapris, I heard something on radio, that she confronted him about his relationships with men in the church and that prompted their split. Anyway, are preachers thought to be holier-than-thou because they are closer to God than us??They are men, simple as that. He made a mistake. He kicked her butt, very bad and very publicly. Because of the viciousness of the attack he needs to be gone. Had it been a one-time thing, then maybe he could have ONE more chance, being a preach and all. How he going to do her like that just because she asked him if he was gay? That's no reason. Had she asked his mama about him being gay, well that's another story.

The Bible says, "Judge not

The Bible says, "Judge not that ye be judged, he that is without sin, cast the first stone." When God looked upon the earth, He said He couldn't find one that was perfect. We all make mistakes. Whose to say that as he was walking away, she wasn't trying to console him? We all know that they were going through relationship problems and don't you dare say that you're not either. She probably followed him because she saw that he was hurt and being a Christian, she didn't want to end the relationship in bad terms. There is a word called, "Forgiveness" and in God's eyes, that's what they both need. As for them both being children of the cloth, I believe both of them should lay low for a while and search their hearts to make sure this is their calling. The Bible says, "Many are called but few are chosen (by Christ) that is. I don't believe in mega churches because of Jim Jones and I'm sure you all know what happened to his followers. In my opinion, one of the biggest mega churches out there is probably heading in the same direction as the one Jim Jones use to run. You tell me where in the Bible does it say a man should pay for God's teachings? Good example:Woman thou are loose

make it racial ????...it is

make it racial ????...it is racial.that's the whole point.
let's do this by the numbers....
* blackman abuses black woman
* locals condemn same,rightfully so.
* question arises as to sharpton, others weighing in with their unsolicited opinions and general posing and profiling as usual....but they are no where to be found.
*the reason they are absent in person and in mouth ?....no whites involved, no chance to cry racism, brutality, injustice or other mantras..hell afterall it was only a black woman, right?
* we all agree spousal abuse is wrong, but where is the input from the out of mind,er, state group? where are all your heroes when its a black/black situation? it's simple , their stock in trade is crying raciscm and crying how unjustly black get treated, all the while smiling for the cameras,as their own kind are disparaged, abuse and victimized by black on black crime.
*the point-these people are racist opportunists themselves and you and intheknow,justus4, etc. can't bring yourselves to admit the truth
*chastise your own people about racism-we are tired of hearing it.
