STATS: 17, a senior at Hephzibah High School

WHAT: Prize-winning orator

HER STORY: While classmates were enjoying the lazy days of summer last month, Tyler won the Southern Christian Leadership Conference Oratorical Contest for the Augusta chapter of the national organization.

"I talked about continuing the legacy of the SCLC and basically keeping the dream alive and inspiring others to succeed," she said.

Her five-minute oration at Glenn Hills High School won her $150 and a chance at a $5,000 scholarship - along with the admiration of the head judge, Gwen Smith.

"She is a dynamic speaker," Dr. Smith said.

Tyler is the president of Hephzibah's student council, is in the drama club and is a member of the Technology Student Association.

"I'm well-rounded," the future kindergarten teacher said. "This gives me a chance to express my opinions."
