Schnyder, Peer win Rogers Cup openers

In Toronto, 10th-seeded Patty Schnyder defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Rogers Cup on Monday.

Other players advancing included Shahar Peer, who edged Michaella Krajicek 7-5, 7-6 (7).

The top eight seeds had a bye into the second round of the $1.34-million tournament at the Rexall Centre at York University.

- In Mason, Ohio, Juan Ignacio Chela beat Tim Henman 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round of the Western & Southern Financial Group Masters.

Benedict, CAU are CSRA Classic teams

Benedict College, in Columbia, and Clarke Atlanta University have been chosen to play in this year's 15th annual CSRA Classic football game.

The teams will square off Oct. 27 at Lucy Laney Stadium. The event begins with a fundraiser banquet Oct. 25 at the Augusta Doubletree Hotel.

Whitfield jumps to 9th in WBO ranking

Augusta native Rayonta "Stingray" Whitfield moved up three spots to No. 9, according to the World Boxing Organization.

Whitfield, the NABO flyweight champion, is coming off a second-round knockout of Jair Jimenez at Bell Auditorium earlier this month. The undefeated Whitfield has 18 wins, with 9 knockouts.

Riley plans to coach for three more years

Pat Riley said that he plans to coach the Miami Heat for the three remaining years on his contract, an announcement that ends months of speculation about his immediate future.

The 62-year-old Riley, who gave up coaching in 2003, said he'll remain in the dual role of team president as well.

Former pro wrestler found dead in home

In Tampa, Fla., former pro wrestling champion Brian "Crush" Adams died Monday after he was found unconscious in his home. He was 44.

He showed no visible signs of injury and foul play was not suspected, police spokeswoman Janelle McGregor said.

Pair finish first at state doubles event

In Lilburn, Ga., Hester Jackson and Scott Rollins won titles at the Georgia State Doubles Championship last weekend.

Jackson, of Hephzibah, and Rollins, of Martinez, defeated Hanif Merali and Jim Hawkins in the final round of the 45 and over division. They also finished second in the 50 and over division.

Leah Upshaw, of Evans, and Hawkins came in second in mixed doubles. Haley Rollins, of Martinez and Jason Berneth placed third.

Kickboxing

Three win amateur titles at IKF Classic

In Orlando, Fla. three fighters at Greubel's Mixed Martial Arts in Augusta won amateur titles at the IKF World Classic last weekend.

New champions at the tournament include John Greubel, Nicholas Torrance and Nathan Key, the World Association of Kickboxing Organization Junior Fighter of the Year.

'Skinny Man' sets new record with lift

In Manchester, Tenn., Tee "Skinny Man" Meyers set a new world record with a lift of 745 pounds in the 181-pound weight class at the WABDL World Cup on Saturday.
