Silver Bluff Key Club wins another honor

The Silver Bluff High School Key Club has won international recognition for the second year in a row.

Key Club members were recognized for the club's Video Award in mid-July at Disney World in Orlando, Fla.

The Key Club, sponsored by the Aiken Kiwanis Club, is an extracurricular activity that focuses on service to the school and community.

"We're teaching young students to become leaders in the community and give them opportunities to give back," sponsor Mary Thomas said.

Ms. Thomas said the school has been recognized with international awards at least 10 times since the school's service organization began 21 years ago.

This past year, students worked with Helping Hands, a foster care home for abused and neglected children.

"We wanted them to know that someone out there cared and was there for them," Ms. Thomas said. "We went by during Christmas and other times throughout the year."

The video the Silver Bluff club made for competition was used to spread the word about projects such as the one with Helping Hands.

The theme focused on service to community and featured a photo montage of students at events throughout the year.

It would have cost too much to send the entire group to Disney World to receive the award, so local organizations and the high school paid for Patrick Derricott, the club president, to attend the ceremony.

Ms. Thomas said she knew her students had won an award, but not which one, so there was still suspense in the event.

As a former Key Club Member

As a former Key Club Member at Silver Bluff I must say that they have really out done them selves this time! I am proud of the Key Club and hope it continues through out the years.
