MILLEN, Ga. - Emory Dewey Newton, age 87, died peacefully at home on Monday, July 23, 2007. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 25 at 11:00 a.m. at Elam Baptist Church, Millen, Georgia, with Rev. Maurice Crowder and Rev. Kevin Fanner officiating. Interment will follow in the Elam Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Crowe-Fields Funeral Home, 364 E. Winthrope Avenue, Millen, Georgia. Mr. Newton, a life-long resident of Jenkins County, was born September 6, 1919. He graduated in 1937 from Millen High School, attended Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College, and graduated in 1941 from the University of Georgia with a degree in Agribusiness. He was a member of the Elam Baptist Church, where he was active in the Men's Bible Class, Brotherhood, and Merry Makers. A life-long farmer in Jenkins County, Mr. Newton was managing partner of Jenkins County Gin Company and John C. Wilson Company during which time he served on numerous advisory boards for farm-related companies. Mr. Newton was co-founder of Ogeechee Valley Bank, now Queensborough National Bank & Trust. He served as President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ogeechee Valley Bank. Mr. Newton was a faithful and valuable member of the Board of Directors of Planters EMC for 33 years, including terms as Secretary-Treasurer and Chairman. Drafted at age 26, he served his country in the Pacific Theater during World War II in the United States Navy. Mr. Newton similarly served his community through many civic organizations, including Lions Club, Rotary Club, Jaycees, Millen Merchants Association, and Jenkins County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Newton was also instrumental in founding the Magnolia Country Club. Mr. Newton was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Lane Newton and Katherine Waters Newton; two brothers, Johnny Calhoun Newton and James Garnett Newton, Sr.; and a sister, Nell Katherine Mitchell Godbee. He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Newton; three daughters, Sandra (Murray) Freedman of Augusta, Marsha Newton-Graham of Charlotte, N.C., Brenda (Jay) Hodgin of Thomson; and one son, Emory Dewey (Laura) Newton II of Statesboro; seven grandchildren, Stacy Freedman (Perry) White, Allen (Kathryn) Freedman, Will Graham, Kate Graham, Scott (Mary Beth) Hodgin, Anna Newton, and Abby Newton; seven great-grandchildren, Harrison, Davis, and Rachel White, Murray and Julia Freedman, and Jackson and Asher Hodgin; three nephews, Garnett and John W. Newton, Perry Lee Mitchell; and three nieces, Shirley Newton Ashley, Kathy Godbee Gay, and Nancy Godbee Andrews. Active pallbearers will be Scott Hodgin, Allen Freedman, Will Graham, Perry Lee Mitchell, John W. Newton, and Perry White. Honorary pallbearers will be the Eight O'clock Coffee Club: Rev. Maurice Crowder, Harry Dwelle, Jimmie Edenfield, Lamar Gay, Andy Hodges, Hank Joyner, Jim Lindsay, Perry Lee Mitchell, Richard "Dick" Parker, Bill Pendorf, Waybum Roberts, Morgan Sharpe Jr., and Edward Wilson; Directors and Management of Planters EMC: Elbert Burke, Stanton R Hillis, Sammy Jenkins, Linda D. Josey, DeRon Lariscy, Hubert Reeves, III, Robert A. Reeves, Bobby C. Smith, Jr., Horace H. Weathersby, III, Ainsworth Zeagler, Paula Adams, Matt Brinson, Randy Hill, Ellis Lovett, Joey McBride, Phil Rhodes, Rose Small, and Johnny Strickland; and Howdy McTeer, Edward Thompson, W. A.
