Woman sues over alleged false narcotics arrest

  • Follow Metro

A local narcotics team has been hit with another federal lawsuit.

Andrea L. Golson filed suit in U.S. District Court against named and unknown members of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, alleging false arrest and malicious prosecution.

Ms. Golson was arrested on July 16, 2005, on charges of trafficking in cocaine and possession of marijuana. She was indicted, but both charges were dropped three months later, according to court records.

Ms. Golson alleges in her lawsuit that she and Daryl Goodwin were checking into the Budget Inn in Augusta when they were wrongfully swept up in the arrests of two men neither knew, Maurice S. Bradham and Demarcus Pierre Wideman.

Mr. Goodwin was charged with possession of marijuana after officers found less than an ounce of the drug on him, according to the lawsuit.

Ms. Golson alleges she was arrested, too, although the officers did not have any reason to believe she was connected to any illegal drugs.

Ms. Golson was indicted along with Mr. Bradham and Mr. Wideman on cocaine-trafficking charges, which carry a potential mandatory minimum 10-year prison sentence and $200,000 fine.

Mr. Goodwin, who was with Ms. Golson, was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He pleaded guilty and received a year on probation.

Mr. Bradham and Mr. Wideman pleaded guilty to cocaine charges. Mr. Bradham was sentenced to one year in jail and 10 years probation.

Mr. Wideman was sentenced to six months in jail and six years on probation, according to court records.

Ms. Golson's federal lawsuit is the third suit filed against the narcotics unit in the past year.

During that time, most of the narcotics officers have left the department or transferred to other divisions.

Federal agents have investigated at least two narcotics officers.

One pleaded guilty to lying to a federal agent and is awaiting sentencing in federal court.

Yes, I can understand how she feels. Three of the people there had drugs. Why in the hell would the police think she might have had some too? But then again she was indicted, kind of like Vick.

Yeah there are bad cops in

Yeah there are bad cops in every department but there are also a huge number of good officers too. It's just like in every other job you have good workers and then you have some good for nothing lazy bums. Why is it that law enforcement officers get such a bad rap. People are never satisfied and when mistakes are made the whole department is blamed. What if this woman had been let go and not arrested, then everyone would be complaining that they were showing favortism because she was a woman or that she was white or that she was black. I'm not here to judge Ms. Golson but come on - she was checking into the Budget Inn with a man who had drugs on his possession. Like mamma always said "birds of a feather, flock together".

augusta/heph homeowner and

augusta/heph homeowner and jebko are you guys stupid. if a cop is going to arrest he better d well have a good reason. not because i was in a "bad area". if it was you, you would be [filtered word] also. so don't try to feed the public that bs about what she taught as a child. you didn't do everything your parents to you to do, otherwise you wouldn't have made such a dumb comment. i have had it with you. i have read several of your comments. and jebko how would like it if those drugs were sold to someone you loved. don't say stupid stuff like that. augusta is having a hard enough time trying to control the drug problem that we have today. and inchristlove, 'birds of a feather, flock together" is sterotype. i have had friends who used drugs and i didn't. it's a matter if character. you people are harsh. nobody stands a chance. whether good or bad someone always has something to say. shut up and sweep around your own door before you go pointing the finger. it's always easier said than done. and if anyone has been keeping up with the reading on the narc dept. you wouldn't make the comments that you make. those people are crazy.

Daryl Goodwin had drugs in

Daryl Goodwin had drugs in his possession shouldn't he have been arrested? Andrea L. Golson was with him while he was in possession of illegal drugs, it makes since to arrest her as well and then sort everything out , as they did. If this case goes to court, the judge should throw it out and hold the attorney in contempt. These cops are doing there job.

honest, those cops were not

honest, those cops were not doing their job. Just because someone is with someone who has drugs does not make them guilty too. I know someone who was in the car with someone who had drugs. Cops did not take the one who had drugs on her, because she had her kid with her. Instead, they arrested the woman who was walking back to the car who had been in a store when the transaction outside took place. Their excuse? They said they had to arrest somebody. Several court dates were set, and about 6 or 8 months later, the charges were dropped.I told her she should have sued. I would have in a minute. Those cops were fired or quit since then.

Where does the buck stop?

Where does the buck stop? Yes there are some good cops and there are some bad cops; and it's really hard to sift out the good from the bad. How do I know?? Well, I was arrested by an over zealous bunch of cops who were offended by the fact that they felt I shouldn't live in a certain neighborhood. They fabricated evidence, changed dates, entered my home without a valid search warrant, and I really didn't have anything to hide. I was told to my face' in order for me to live in the area I did and drive the car that I did, I must be doing something wrong. That investigator looked me in my face with so much rage and asked me" how could a single black woman afford to live in that neighborhood and drive that car unless she was doing something wrong." That really hurt, because I was being stereotyped, and instead of finding something valid to arrest me for, they arrested me for another female with the same name, only difference I married to get the name and she was born with the name. If they had only compared fingerprints and photographs they would have known the difference. I do believe it was a mistake at first, but in the end they tried to cover it up. Shame, shame, shame!!!

fuggie I am sorry that

fuggie I am sorry that happened to you. That was wrong. Just remember all cops are not like that idiot. The young woman I mentioned who was arrested was innocent, and I told her to plead not guilty and demand a jury trial. Everytime she went to court, the cops who were suppose to be there were a no show. She had witnesses who heard the cop say he was arreesting her because the other woman had her kid with her. Best thing you can do is talk to a lawyer about your rights if a cop threatens you like that again.Cops like him give all cops a bad name. I hope our sheriff here in RC will keep getting rid of crooked ones.

Honest,,, It is true that

Honest,,, It is true that Daryl Godwin may have had drugs, but it was only a small amount of marijuana and had the other two men not been there at the time with the cocaine. The female most likely would not have been arrested. Not knowing all the facts about the case she may have a hard time winning. Because that is the norm, to arrest all the individuals involved and let the DA's office and the courts sort out who should be charged in the courts.

I don't see what any of this

I don't see what any of this has to do with "Bad Cops" as 3 have already plead guilty. The police did not plant the drugs, give false testimony or anything else according to the article or information given. This lady was with her husband who was in possession of drugs and with two others dealers of cocaine by their own admission. By all reasonable laws and standards, she should have been arrested until the district attorney or courts could sort out all of the issues. This is a frivilous law suit involving police officers trying to server and better their community and should result in immediate dismissal as well as her paying the taxpayers for waisting their time. As for the deputies, they have a thankless and hard enough job without being second guessed over every single situation and ridiculed within the community. As for the legalization of drugs, that is an entirely different subject and is up to the law makers to decide not the deputies. They were enforcing the laws, keeping the peace and trying to clean up some of our bad motels in the area as stated in previous atricles. They should be commended for their efforts but instead they will now second guess theirselves.

i am glad the truth has come

i am glad the truth has come out about just how criminal these richmond county narcotics investigators are. they have been getting away with the same crimes they are supposed to be enforcing. so its about time that the truth comes out. now this leaves a question on how many men amd women in this county has been has been victim to this dept.s activities. something needs to be done, but of course the city will find away to make this go away.

You hinterline, backwoods

You hinterline, backwoods city living people outta KNOW: EVERY city has crooked vice squad cops. Not all, some, on ANY given city's squad. Power, greed and STRESS of not being creative enough to catch the dealers are the most common factors that make those power hungry cops do the things they do.
