COLUMBIA - A Richland County deputy shot and killed a man during a standoff in which officers say the man tried to burn his house, threatened to commit suicide and lunged at officers with a knife.
Richard Lewis Catoe Jr., 38, was killed in north Columbia.
Authorities were called to the house before 3 a.m. because of a fire.
The sheriff's department described Mr. Catoe as having abnormal strength and said officers tried to stop him with Tasers before firing the fatal shots.
Fire at textile plant began during cleanup
COWPENS - A raging fire at a former textile plant in Spartanburg County on Monday started while workers were cleaning up the facility, a town official said.
No injuries were reported, town administrator Fred Gossett said. Firefighters responded to the former Freedom Textile Chemicals Co. off U.S. Highway 29 near the South Carolina-North Carolina border.
Officials have not determined how the fire started.
Several people were working when the fire began, but everyone got out safely, witnesses said.
The former mill recycled cloth and cotton before it closed nearly a decade ago.
Man donates father's recovered class ring
LAKES OF THE FOUR SEASONS, IND. - A man who received his father's Wofford College class ring more than 60 years after it was lost in a World War II battle in Europe said he intends to donate it to the school.
The ring was returned to William Anderson Jr. after his father, William Anderson Sr., class of 1934, had lost it in November 1944 in the Battle of the Huertgen Forest.
A German named Michael Schumaker returned the ring to Mr. Anderson in 2005.
Now Mr. Anderson, of Lakes of the Four Seasons, said he intends to present it as a gift to Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C.
"I want to make a presentation box that includes the ring, and the story of the ring and photographs of Michael, his grandparents and my dad. I want to include the flag that was draped over my father's coffin and present it," he told The Times of Munster newspaper in Indiana.
The elder Mr. Anderson lost the ring diving into a foxhole. A tree branch snagged the ring, and it flew off his finger.
He died in 2001 at age 90.
