A teenager was shot to death at a south Augusta night club Monday morning, and authorities said they don't know why.

Stedmund Fryer: 18-year-old was shot and killed on the dance floor of Super C's about 2:20 a.m. Monday, police said.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, 150 to 200 people were on the dance floor of Club Super C's Lounge on Tobacco Road at 2:20 a.m. when Stedmund Deaires Fryer, 18, of East Watkins Street, was killed.

"We are pretty sure he was the intended target," sheriff's Sgt. Richard Roundtree said.

Jordache Tanksley, 23, is wanted for questioning and may have been at the club when the shooting occurred, said Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Brandon Beckman.

Witnesses recall hearing one gunshot, Sgt. Roundtree said. The killer hasn't been identified, nor has a motive been determined, he said.

Monday evening, Charles "Super C" Cummings, the club owner, called the shooting "unfortunate" and expressed concern for the victim's family.

Mr. Cummings said it appeared adequate security was provided, with a heavy presence of Richmond County sheriff's deputies and private security inside and outside the establishment.

Patrons are checked with metal detectors and are physically checked for weapons, he said. The shooter could have brought the gun into the club inside a shoe, Mr. Cummings said.

Commissioner Andy Cheek wants to shut down Super C's and said he will introduce an agenda item at today's commission meeting in order to do so.

"Super C's has been a cancer on Tobacco Road for many years and it's time to shut it down," Mr. Cheek said. "Each day they're allowed to open is potential for added trouble.

"Teenagers need a place to go, but not on a Sunday night, and at 3 in the morning?"

Mr. Cummings said he has been in business for 17 years and is a supporter of the south Augusta community.

He once owned the Augusta Super C Seminoles semi-pro football team.

"I've always been a mentor and motivator of many young people in our neighborhood," he said.

In the past year, the sheriff's office reported 29 incidents within and outside of his club.

The shooting is Richmond County's 16th homicide for 2007, Sgt. Roundtree said. There were 20 homicides in 2006.

Mr. Cheek says enough is enough and wants to revoke Mr. Cummings' business and liquor licenses.

"Given their track record, he should have gotten control of this long before someone died on his dance floor," Mr. Cheek said.

Mark Bowen, the Richmond County Chief Deputy Coroner, said Mr. Fryer died of a single gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sgt. Roundtree is asking anyone who was at the club or has information related to the shooting to call the sheriff's office at (706) 821-1020 or (706) 821-1080.

Reach Timothy Cox or Greg Gelpi at (706) 724-0851.

There is something terribly wrong here......A "teen" club open at 3am on a Sunday or any other night is a really bad idea....where are the parents of theses teens?..... And the owners should be held responsible also...close it down !! Parents it looks like these places are breeding grounds for violence...... take responsibility for your kids....demand they shut theses placec down....hey the're YOUR kids. It's really up to you.

I don't know why he is

I don't know why he is allowing teens in a adult club. Makes me SICK, I can't stand it. Andy Cheek you knew this club was a Cancer before the shooting so you need to SHUT YOUR MOUTH, why didn't you do something before now. Trying to exert authority get real Andy. If you close this one close all of them, or every club that had had atleast ONE police incident. Take away the censure you want to do something Andy. AUGUSTA IS BACKWARDS.

What is going on I thought

What is going on I thought you had to be a cetain age to go into a club.....drink alcohol.....or anything else......Augustan you really need to wake up.....I used to live in Augusta there are no nice clubs there anymore where the older crowd could go and hang out.....the club owners are really in it for the money and when you let the kids start taking over your place because they are paying to get in they are not supporting your business with the purchase of alcohol because they are either bringing it in the club with them or have it in the car that they go back and forth to get a refill...I think it is sad that this child had to lose his life on something that probably was very petty

nowadays clubs are open for

nowadays clubs are open for those 18 and older and if you are under 21 are marked by a wrist band, etc. to note you are under the drinking age and cannot buy alcohol. personally, I think you should have to wait till your 21 to go to any clubs teen or adult. this is just another example of society (and parents) trying to allow children to act as adults. They simply are not mature enough.

It does not say that alchol

It does not say that alchol was served.......we all know where the booze is and the owners know too......your right they are in it for the money.............It seems to be a trend right now to open "teen clubs" or "personal care homes"...both are just a front for owners to make easy money..........Commissioners check these persons out before you start changing the zones and issuing licenses.

If Andy or ANY of those

If Andy or ANY of those commissioners knew this club was a cancer to the city before now, why is he (Andy) making it a priority to close it at the commissioner meeting? If that's the case close all the clubs down that has had atleast 1 police call to their establishment are those cancerous as well, will something have to happen like this at one of those?

My question Andy is WHY didn't you say something prior, now all of a sudden it's a "Cancer" to Augusta GET REAL.

Shame our babies are dying

Shame our babies are dying becaue we as parents are allowing them to act like adults. They're not adults, they're children. They have no business going to a club that stays open until 3am in the morning. We're losing our children simply because we as parents wont stand up and say- No to teen clubs that interact with legal age drinking adults- Club owners that think it's cute to have minature adult clubs for our babies need to attend every funeral of the ones killed because they couldnt go out and find a positive business venture.

Shame on you, Augusta

Shame on you, Augusta Chronicle!!! I think it's disrespectful and distasteful to use a mugshot of the victim in your article... please have a little more respect for the victim and his family. I'm sure it would not have been impossible to get a regular photo of him somewhere.

I personally attend this club
Unpublished

I personally attend this club and I was there Sunday night. I almost never go there on Wednsdays and Sundays because all the young kids are there. I went against all my reservations because it was my sister's birthday and we just wanted to have a drink since she traveled out of town to come here and visit. What a memory to take back to Arizona. Not saying there is no crime in Arizona but it was a small damper on her vacation. Everything was going smoothly until that happened. When the night first started out it was not that crowded and around midnight is when everyone basically started to come in. This is not a teen club...on Wednesday they call it college night and none of these kids are in college. Sunday caters to the young kids because they play nothing but rap music. Granted the wrist bands identify under 21, but you have patrons that actually purchase drinks for the underage kids which contributes to the problem. Alcohol and stupidity will never mix and you have that combination on Sunday nights. These kids are very disrespectful in the club. I am not just talking, I am an actual witness. I will admit the security was in place Sunday night but they can only do so much.

As for sugarbear, instead of
Unpublished

As for sugarbear, instead of looking for a place to go judging by your spelling...you need to be in school. As far as a place for teens to go, parents "NEED" to get involved and plan family activities with their children. It doesn't matter how much security was in the club that night, anytime when you have young little boys arguing over turf, colors, girls, drugs, and gang-affiliation the problems will exist. I admit there should be places for teens to go, but not a club where alcohol is being served. Not every teen is a bad seed but most teens are viewed the same. It is not for us to be judge, jury, and executioner but another young life has been taken in the balance. Another family destroyed and when the person responsible for this act is apprehended then maybe we can get some answers. Let's put the blame where it belongs. First of all, the club was over-crowded so the deputies as well as the security were grossly out-numbered. It is not the responsibility for the RCSO to baby-sit your children. These officers are "LAW-ENFORCEMENT" not teen day-care. Parents need to ensure that their teen is home by midnight. The question is: Do the parents know or care where their children are?

Where were the parents alot

Where were the parents alot of ppl are over 21 yrs of age in that club you dont need your mommy .Andy Cheek is a joke close some clubs in augusta where would all the ppl go. There's already hardly alot of places to go, ppl already complain about the mall being a hangout, what would happen if a couple clubs close in augusta . Its about 100 to 300 ppl in these clubs & because one person wants to get a gun we have to put the blame on everybody. What about the ppl who came there to have a good time why should they be punish. Stop saying augusta has a gang problem obvisouly you havent even been to other major cities or even mid-size ones. If augusta has a gang problem what does savannah, atlanta, macon, cities in your own state have then. Once again ppl who grew up in the same neighborhood, or went to the same high school does not make it a gang just because its black kids. THATS THE PROBLEM AUGUSTA CHRONICLE IS SPREADING FALSE NEWS ON GANGS, YOU CANT GO AROUND SAYING THINGS ARE GANG-RELATED WHEN ITS NOT OR YOU DONT KNOW. INNOCENT PPL GET KILLLED EVERYDAY BECAUSE REAL GANG MEMBERS THINK THAT THESE PPL WHO MIGHT DID THE CRIME WAS IN A GANG SO THEY TAKE OUT THEIR FRIEND, SISTER, BROTHER

I agree with Worried07. The

I agree with Worried07. The mugshot of Stedmund Fryer should not have been run. It makes it seem as if he was a troublemaker, and distracts readers from the true story. At first glance, a reader just looking at the headline and the picture, but not the caption and the subsequent story would be led to believe that the deceased is being sought in connection with the shooting. Besides that, the mugshot is what the AC chose to display as representative of young Fryer's life, probably without gathering any information about how he really lived; and instead focusing on the fact that he had obviously been arrested and that he was murdered. This story was not rushed to print because it was yesterday's breaking news. The AC had time to acquire another photo for this story. I am almost certain that had the family known Mr. Fryer would become known in death by his mugshot, they would most assuredly have given the AC a picture to publish in this article.

JCM922 i been to super c's

JCM922 i been to super c's alot of times i never saw no gangs meeting up there. YOU MUST GO EVERY TIME ITS OPEN, YOU OBVIOSULY MUST LOVE THAT CLUB SINCE YOU KNOW ALL THE GANGS MEET THERE WHEN AUGUSTA HAS OVER 100 CLUBS. Why would gangs meet there, wouldnt they meet at a place were no police are at, super c's there's cops outside & some even driving on tobacco rd. I thought the object is to be low key not to go looking for where the police are going to be. When i go to that club i see ppl just dancing & having a good time. Its sad just because they are black you judge everybody so quicly. You do know it was over 150 to 200 ppl in that club, & only 1 person had a gun. If all the trash, or gang trash in augusta meets up there wouldnt it be atleast 400 guns i mean 175 guns atleast. Because real gang members carry alot of guns not 1 but 5 or 6 at a time. Its sad that augusta chronicle is showing this picture, what a racist move if this person was white especially a white woman who got shot we would not show this.

jcm922 obviously youre a

jcm922 obviously youre a joke, you dont know cops spray paint out gangs graffati & replace it with another gangs. cops & the media alwasy spread fuel to the fire when there is none. you dont think if the news says somebody was shot & it was gang related doesnt get them more viewers. they have to make the story intresting, but innocent ppl are dying because of that. what if somebody in this man's family or one of his friends or whoever thinks its gang related & wants to retaliate. the cycle will go back & forth they shoot we shoot back, they shoot , we shoot back, all created by the augusta chronicle conservative meida. because the chronicle or another white conservative media who is afraid of every black male says something is gang related to turn neighborhoods agaginst each other. now one neighborhood thinks the other doesnt like them, it only takes 1 person to get a gun go to the other neighborhood & shoot up the park. now little kids on bikes get shot, little girls get shot playing jump rome. now ppl are mad & now we have a gang war all started by the conseravtive meida just what the good ole boys wanted.

I've lived in other

I've lived in other cummunities that required patrons to be 21 or older to enter a nightclub that served alcohol. Self-policing by these club owners is a strictly absurb concept. They are profit driven businessmen (and I use the term very loosly) who couldn't care less about who they let in. Also, if you need to pass through a metal detector to enter the club, you need to go somewhere else. Let's challenge the mayor and commissioners to review the city codes and ordinances and close Super C's, Dirty South and other clubs that allow under 21 to enter their establishments.
