ANDERSON - Two inmates awaiting trials on murder charges beat and used a sheet to try to strangle an Anderson County jail guard in a planned attack, authorities said.
Stanley Burson Dehart and Johnny Earl Mahaffey disabled a security camera at about 2 a.m. Wednesday, then attacked the guard who came to check on the equipment, sheriff's spokeswoman Susann Griffin said.
A second guard saw the scuffle on a different camera and called for help, deputies said.
Mr. Dehart and Mr. Mahaffey were charged with assault and battery with intent to kill. The guard, James Adam Sizemore, was treated for cuts on his head.
Brakes blamed in fatal logging truck wreck
CHESTER - Defective brakes on a loaded logging truck led to a wreck that killed two children in March, according to the state Highway Patrol.
Only four of the 10 brakes on the 80,000-pound log truck were working when the truck ran a red light on state Highway 9 near Richburg, said Highway Patrol Cpl. James Rikard.
The truck hit a van, killing a 9-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy who had just been picked up from Lewisville Elementary School, authorities said.
Cpl. Rikard testified Wednesday at a probable cause hearing for the log truck's driver, George Rogers, 51, who has been charged with two counts of reckless homicide.
Charge is added in shooting outside mall
COLUMBIA - Police have filed an additional charge against a man who authorities say drove away the suspect in a killing outside a Columbia mall.
Brian Christian Leagones, 21, was arrested again Monday and charged with misprision of a felony because he lied to investigators and didn't report a crime, police said.
Mr. Leagones was initially charged with obstruction of justice and accessory to murder.
Mr. Leagones drove 21-year-old Michael James Young Jr. away from Columbiana Centre on June 13 after Mr. Young shot his estranged wife, Shaunna Lynn Bell, 21, and her father, Robert Bell, 49, authorities said. Mr. Bell died from his injuries.
Nude couple who fell have been identified
COLUMBIA - Autopsies were scheduled Thursday for a naked couple who died after falling about 50 feet from the roof of a downtown office building.
Police on Wednesday said their deaths were apparently an accident. Clothing was found on the roof, and authorities said the couple might have been having sex.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the victims as Brent W. Tyler, 21, and Chelsey A. Tubleston, 21.
The couple were found in the road by a cabdriver about 5 a.m. Wednesday.
