Georgia Power hit by copper thieves

SAVANNAH, Ga. - A Georgia Power facility is the latest Savannah business to be targeted by copper thieves.

Police say the burglars took "an enormous amount" of bare, solid and insulated copper from a plant Saturday, and company investigators were scheduled Monday to determine exactly how much was lost.

Workers arrived at the facility Saturday and found five holes cut in the fence, according to a Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police report.

Large, heavy pallets containing coils of copper tubing were stolen, workers told police, as was copper taken from cables and company vehicles.

Investigators think more than one suspect was involved because of the weight of the stolen items.

Police found coils of insulated copper lying near the fence, along with a pair of bolt cutters. Officers also found more copper lying in a ditch between the fence and the company's property, the report states.

Burglars smashed the windows of a Georgia Power vehicle and stole a laptop computer, according to the report.

Workers told police they were last at the facility around 2:45 a.m. Saturday and did not see any damage.

The company is supposed to be monitored by security guards 24 hours a day, police said.

With copper prices steadily rising, thefts of the metal have spiked in Chatham County and across the U.S.

Georgia Power has experienced numerous break-ins across the state this year.

In April, Georgia Power spokesman Lynn Wallace said copper thefts resulted in "significant loss of revenue" for the company.
