Threat sends officials to court

  • Follow Metro

Richmond County school board member Joe Scott is seeking an arrest warrant against colleague Venus Cain, alleging she threatened to beat him up during a closed board meeting last week. Both will face a magistrate judge this week.

"She, for no reason at all, threatened to do harm to me," Mr. Scott said Monday.

According to both officials, the altercation occurred when the board met behind closed doors Friday to interview two finalists for superintendent. Board members were hashing out the procedures for the interviews when the discussion turned heated between Mrs. Cain and Mr. Scott.

According to Mr. Scott, she told him, "My husband is 6 feet tall. If I can kick his A, I can kick your A."

On Monday, Mrs. Cain did not deny the threat but said she was speaking "nicely" to Mr. Scott when the conversation escalated and he started "screaming and hollering and cussing" at her.

"I just threatened to beat him up," she said.

The board was talking about the need to be fair to the finalists by writing down the questions to ensure they were worded the same way. Mr. Scott didn't want to write his questions down, feeling it would impede him in some way. "No one's going to silence me. I'm going to say what's right," he said. "They're not going to put a muzzle on me. I'm not a horse or a dog."

Mr. Scott filed for a warrant application, but a pre-arrest hearing will determine whether there is probable cause to move forward, said Richmond County Chief Magistrate Judge William D. Jennings III.

"I don't know if I've ever had a (pre-arrest) hearing involving two elected officials before," the judge of 20 years said Monday.

Last week's altercation is nothing new, Mrs. Cain said.

"We've been fighting with Joe in executive session," she said. "No one's seen what's happening."

Reach Greg Gelpi at (706) 828-3851 or greg.gelpi@augustachronicle.com.

WHAT'S NEXT:

A pre-arrest hearing will be held at 9 a.m. Friday to determine if there is cause to proceed with the warrant procedure.

This is a fine example of how our board menbers work behind closed doors. I'm sure this will make the finalists for the superintendents position happy that they applied for the job. I thought for a minute you were writing an article about a county commission meeting. Isn't it great to live in an area where our elected officials set such a good example for our young people.

If Mr. Scott is afraid of a woman, then the School system is no place for him. Not only does it take a lot of conviction and confidence in one's self to work on the behalf of our young people, but have you seen some of them. They can be as big as 6'1-6-5, and Mr. Scott they really can "K-I-C-K Y-O-U-R A!! I suggest the voters consider this spinless and immature act when he comes up for election, I know I will!!

SERIOUN, wha are you saying? Because she is a female, that she should be allowed to threaten people? If it was the other way, you would say, what kid of man would talk this way toward a female.

How absolutely ridiculous and

How absolutely ridiculous and childish. I am appalled at this type of unprofessionalism between adults on the job. How are these board members supposed to lead students when they exhibit exactly the type of behavior prohibited in the schools? Outrageous. Shame on you. Grow up and act like you have. I will remember this little episode at the next election.

Yes they are idiots. I wonder how they got there in the first place? Candidate #1 will do whatever is best for the kids no matter who's toes he steps on i.e. A K Hasan. Candidate #2 is the right flavor or gender. Now which one do we pick. By the way this goes for the white and black and purple candidates.

First the commission, now the

First the commission, now the school board. Sounds as if it's time to remove everyone from every office and start over. How can people who hold the reins for school children act so child-like? Is there not one ounce or professionalism in that place? Just think THOSE people are choosing the superintendent of schools. How can the county expect students to act with pride and dignity when the people who direct the schools are acting with total disregard for each other and the position that they hold? I guess board meetings will have to provide a policeman in order for the meetings to be conducted in a civil manner. The people in the two districts represented by these people should rise up and demand that those two either act with dignity and in accordance with their position or resign.

Joe just changed addresses

Joe just changed addresses from fighting at the James Brown Arena meetings to the School Board. People do not change and now he has a say in the spending of more money than the Commission. These types of actions do not just happen once, and the voters should have remembered his actions on the JBA Authority. Historically Augusta voters get fed up with elected officeials and kick them out and elect someone worse, time after time. No wonder Columbia County and Aiken County continue to prosper with all the folks moving there and all of the car lots taking the tax dollars away from Richmond County -- people that can move to avoid tax increases due to reduced tax collections are moving. Did your home tax accessment go up this year? A tax increase without the Commission having to vote on it.

By the way, once again the teachers of some of these posters have miserably failed when it comes to spelling. What is a "spinless" act and do you not know that a question should be followed by a QUESTION mark? But then if people like these two are choosing the superintendent and running the schools, it's no wonder.

Mrs. Cain has a military

Mrs. Cain has a military background and I think that is what got her elected. However, I feel that the criteria for nominees needs to be revamped. I have said this all along. In Augusta, many in the commission seats and rcboe board members do not have college degrees. THose with degrees tend to be hold more morals and dedication and duty to their jobs. THey represent Augusta. The ones in office now that are acting uncivilized need to be reprimanded immediately, given a first offenders chance and if behavior does not change, they must be removed. We do not need to wait till the next election. Just as the students have a code of conduct/ethics handbook so do employees for the RCBOE and the commission. I am really embarrassed over this and I bet when the male nominee for superintendent was on tv yesterday talking on his cell phone he was probably talking to a close friend about the circus we have here. I hope the next superintendent is TOUGH.

If you notice Joe Scott takes

If you notice Joe Scott takes trouble whereever he goes. Do you remember all of the bickering that use to go on during the Coliseum Authority authority meetings? They seem to have quieted down haven't they??? Guess why Joe Scott is no longer a member of that Board. Now look at where the bickering is coming from...the School Board where Joe Scott is a member!!! Messy business seems to follow whereever he goes. But that is still no excuse for Ms. Cain's actions. She should be setting a better example.

Why would writing his

Why would writing his question down on paper impede him in some way? Would it reveal his(School Board authority) ignorance of the English language and gammatical skills? Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak(write) and remove all doubt! Too late for that, though!
