Deputies' story will be on TV
The story of two Richmond County sheriff's deputies will be featured during Saturday's 9 p.m. Fox TV telecast of America's Most Wanted.
Deputy David James said the segment will focus on the kidney transplant he received from fellow Deputy Eric Mark Sikes, who died earlier this year in a car accident.
The telecast will "focus on officers who've lost their lives in the line of duty," Deputy James said Thursday. Other agencies also will be featured.
Earlier this year, Buffalo, N.Y., officer Carl Andolina was voted America's Most Wanted's "All-Star." Deputy James earned a spot as one of eight final qualifiers, but did not win the coveted award.
Experts fail to set off Westside bomb model
Bomb technicians failed Thursday to detonate a device similar to one that prompted Wednesday's arrest of a Westside High School senior.
Maj. Ken Autry said several efforts to explode a device like one found in the bookbag of Raymond Charles Smalley, 18, were unsuccessful.
Maj. Autry said the finding doesn't change the suspect's intent, and he remains charged with possession of a destructive device, possession of a weapon on school property and carrying a concealed weapon.
"We still are left with the fact that he had a device with a detonator in it and he had the lighter in his pocket," he said.

Student found guilty of using pepper spray
A Richmond County eighth-grader released pepper spray in a classroom during state testing April 27, according to a school disciplinary report released this week.
The 14-year-old admitted he did it, causing some of his East Augusta Middle School classmates to begin coughing, the report said. And when a few went to the restroom to wash the spray off their faces, he followed them.
Once in the restroom, the pupil sprayed the pepper spray again, the report said.
Finding him guilty, the tribunal sent him to in-school suspension for the remainder of the school year and sent him to the alternative school for the first semester of the 2007-08 school year.

And if a police officer did that they would charge him criminally and fire him. This kid gets suspension and a transfer. The RCBOE Tribunal system is a joke. Send him to jail!
True, the RCBOE tribunal system is a joke, but you must realize that because the student is a juvenile, he can get away with just about anything short of rape and murder. And that's the problem, juveniles know this. The Dept. of Juvenile Justice uses a scale as far as when to commit a juvenile to a detention facility, and if the crime falls below a certain number on the scale, then the child is usually turned over to a parent or guardian. It's ridiculous. These little criminals are the future thugs that law enforcement will constantly be tied up dealing with. I say bring back boot camp. And put someone in charge of the Georgia DJJ who has the guts to enforce our laws and punish these hoodlums!
I would have rather the student been sent to the alterantive school for at least a year. They sure have been sending everyone there for only a semester lately.
Ditto for the bomb making students. Future thugs!
my son got caught with drugs last Sept in Burke co and was expelled for the rest of his senoir yr and then had to attend the alternative school for the whole year so he can graduate. He had no other discipline problems and had good grades. So. no, the punishment the child got wasnt fair.
What was up with this kid and pepper spray. Who finally stopped this kid. Are there so many kids to be sent to alter. school that they have to send them only for a semester? What's going on at home. Hopefully something will be done there.
I also want to say how much fun the fishing will be for the kids. Hope it will be a nice day.
Probably a special ed. (labeled) student that is protected by LIBERAL laws written by idiots called DEMOCRATS!
