Thank God someone heard this young man's cry before it was too late.
ATHENS, Ga. - A University of Georgia student was sent to an Augusta prison hospital for evaluation after his statements alarmed a professor and police officers sent to take him to a mental exam found him with a gun.
Brandon Ginyard, 27, faces two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer. Authorities said he confronted officers April 30 with a loaded .40 semiautomatic handgun when they arrived at his apartment with a commitment order and a warrant to search for weapons, according to UGA police reports.
A judge signed the order and search warrants after Mr. Ginyard was accused of making threatening statements during a meeting that morning with Terry College of Business' academic director.
Mr. Ginyard was agitated and ended the meeting by telling the professor, "Graduation doesn't matter. I will either be in jail or dead by May 11," police reports said.
Mr. Ginyard was taken to East Central Regional Hospital in Augusta for psychological evaluation and was released into police custody Monday afternoon, according to reports.
A bond hearing is scheduled Thursday in Athens-Clarke County Magistrate Court.
