'Dirty Dancing' site remains popular draw
LAKE LURE, N.C. - Nearly every day, someone makes a pilgrimage to the old boys camp where much of the movie Dirty Dancing was filmed.
"They say they just want to see the site," said John Cloud, who is developing the property into a luxury residential community.
Most of the exterior shots were filmed at Mountain Lake Resort near Roanoke, Va. Most of the interior shots - inside Johnny's cabin, in the hall where the climactic dance scene occurs - were shot at the old boy's camp in Lure Woods.
Astronauts remember Schirra at induction
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - More than two dozen former astronauts assembled Saturday at Kennedy Space Center to honor the Astronaut Hall of Fame's newest inductees also remembered Wally Schirra, one of the space program's legendary old-timers.
Mr. Schirra, who died Thursday at 84, was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts and the fifth American in space.
Saturday marked the hall's induction of shuttle astronauts Michael Coats, Steven Hawley and Jeffrey Hoffman.
But Mr. Schirra was the main honoree.
"Wally was a great gamester, a wonderful person ... He was a 'gotcha' guy," said former Apollo astronaut Al Worden.
Among Mr. Schirra's notable gags were smuggling a corned beef sandwich to the Gemini 3 crew so they could eat it in flight and giving Mission Control a deadpan report of a UFO that matched a description of Santa Claus during the December 1965 Gemini 6 flight.
Death row inmate to undergo examination
ALBEMARLE, N.C. - A death row inmate who previously refused to undergo a mental competency evaluation agreed Friday to answer psychiatrists' questions.
The execution of Guy Tobias LeGrande, 48, had been delayed because a judge wanted to know whether he was too mentally ill to be put to death.
Mr. LeGrande has refused to acknowledge the attorneys who represent him. He represented himself at trial, where he wore a Superman T-shirt and pleaded with jurors to sentence him to death for the 1993 shooting death of Ellen Munford.
