School gets donation

Fox Creek High School received a $1,000 donation from CH2 Savannah River Company for the 2006-2007 school year.

Scholarships awarded

EnergySolutions Foundation has announced the following scholarships that include $2,000 and a new laptop computer. They went to 10th grade applicants who showed proficiency in math or science:

Military milestones

l Air Force Airman Chanell S. Cato, a 2005 graduate of North Augusta High School and daughter of Deloris Price, of North Augusta, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.

- Army Pvt. James W. Garlick, son of John Garlick, of Aiken, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia.

- Army Pvt. Johnele T. Lionetti, a 2003 graduate of Silver Bluff High School and son of Pearl K. Whitmore, of New Ellenton, has graduated from the Automated Logistical Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at the U.S. Army Quartermaster Center and School, Fort Lee, Petersburg, Va.

Teacher of the year

Jeremy Brooks, agriculture instructor and FFA adviser at Midland Valley High School, has been named the South Carolina Young Agricultural Education Teacher of the Year by the South Carolina Association of Agricultural Educators.

Fox Creek given funds

The Fox Creek High School Parent-Teacher-Community Association recently presented the school's board of directors with a check for $7,000 from fundraisers throughout the school year.

School helps center

St. Mary's Catholic School raised $1,090.58 for the Aiken Pregnancy Center during Lent.

Miss Junior Teen

Robyn Scott, of Aiken, an honors student at South Aiken High School and daughter of Robert Scott Jr. and Stepheni Scott, has been named Miss Junior Teen South Carolina 2007.

Students rewarded

The following students and faculty of the University of South Carolina Aiken received Magellan Scholar Awards for the summer and fall terms of 2007:

Kristen Acklie, a junior majoring in English, and Dr. Jill Hampton, assistant professor of English, received a $3,000 grant for their project titled Jim Sheridan and Irish Film.

Heather Davis, a junior majoring in history, and Dr. Maggi Morehouse, assistant professor of history, received a $3,000 grant for their project titled Music Production in Post-Katrina New Orleans.

Michael Drinkwater, a senior biology major, and Dr. Michele Harmon, assistant professor of biology, received $2,897 for their project titled Contributions of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons to Non-point Source Runoff.

Asma Jaber, a senior studying anthropology at the Columbia campus, and Dr. Elaine Lacy, a professor of history at USC Aiken, received $2,968 for their project titled Discovering the Roots of Nativism in Contemporary South Carolina.

Pupils plant trees

Pupils from Leavelle McCampbell Middle School in Graniteville and employees at the Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire LLC facility in Aiken County recently planted 15,000 longleaf pine trees to enhance the plant's wildlife habitat area.

Traver Toole, son of Don and Susan Toole, of North Augusta, was selected to represent Furman University, Greenville, S.C., at the 47th annual Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference in Annapolis, Md.
