Standoff: Police try to coax man from apartment

  • Follow Metro

As of 2 a.m. Friday, authorities, including the Richmond County SWAT team, were continuing their efforts to coax a man from his west Augusta apartment after he allegedly threatened to shoot a sheriff's deputy in a Thursday night stand-off.

At about 10:11 p.m., a deputy was dispatched to Center West Villas, 1075 Bertram Road, after 911 officials received complaints about a noisy tenant who played loud music, said Richmond County sheriff's Lt. Robert Partain, a SWAT team member.

When the deputy knocked on a door in the 600 building, a man inside the apartment threatened to shoot the deputy and the officer heard what sounded liked a gun being cocked, Lt. Partain said.

Police did not immediately identify the man, but it is believed he was armed and alone inside the apartment.

Neighbors who reside inside the 600 building were evacuated from the premises and watched as SWAT team members entered the building and approached the second-floor, rear apartment.

"All we can do at this point is wait. Hopefully we'll make some contact with him and we can all go home safely," Lt. Partain said.

"It's a waiting game."

Great Job, ya'll thanks for

Great Job, ya'll thanks for taking care of this without the usual violence and mayhem that American police seem so fond of.

I guess the verbal judo program has begun to show the desired results.

Thank Goodness, it was

Thank Goodness, it was resolved. I live in the complex, and it could have been worse than it was. Perhaps the gentleman was off his mental medication and was disoriented and delusional. Just thank goodness Augusta's finest handled the situation without any serious harm.... Kudos!!!

Just another sociopath who

Just another sociopath who thinks it's all about him. First - he drives the neighbors nuts. Next - he wants to gun down a cop. Then - taxpayers will have to pay for his upkeep in jail. Maybe - we'll get lucky and he'll make a false move and then the cops can drop him! Game over!

he is a good man he just so

he is a good man he just so happens to be my father. He is just going through a rough time. He just fond out yesterday his brother has cancer and is dying. He is also a Vietnam veteran and is having a hard dealing with it. Some people do not know what these men have been through and think they should just get over it. They can't, when something bad happens they go back to the war and do not even know what they are doing. I am thankful that Richmond County handled this so well. I am also sorry for all the scares he has caused. Now he is in a place he can get help.

Yes BILLY123, there is no crome in Columbia County. It is just heaven on earth. Why not just build a fence around it and just keep all of the rest of the state's citizens out. But then you will have to find another job. More than likely you work outside of Columbia county.

Had to respond to billy123

Had to respond to billy123 who I assume is uneducated in class and tack in dealing with people. From a person who lives in Col. County and enjoys the beauty in all the CSRA has to offer. I would like to inform you that this man in the 'apartment' (no one mention trailer park) complex has more class than you will ever just by what you have written. If you have not notice C.C. is apart of the Augusta Area. Thank you R.C. Sheriff Dept. for the way you handle the situation. Praying for him/you Most of us are proud of 'all' our Finest who protect an go beyond the call of duty. So please 'billy123' don't brag about something I am sure you did not have a hand in building up C.C. You should get out more an see what 'we' as a whole have to offer in the CSRA.
About the trailer parks (we do have several), trash, ect. that you mention...why don't you offer your help in those areas that are in need. Check your Ga ratings on schools. I grew up in Aiken County, attended church in Augusta and now live in C.C. I am proud to call CSRA home. People need not put others down just because of the type of shelter, clothes, ed., ect. of others. Decent people live in trailers also.
