SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. - Lewis Benjamin "L.B." Cawthorne, Jr., age 80, died Monday, April 30, 2007 at his residence. Mr. Cawthorne was born in Raleigh, NC, the son of the late Lewis Benjamin, Sr. and Vallia Kate Mitchell Cawthorne. He was a US Navy Veteran having served in WWII onboard the USS New York. Mr. Cawthorne retired from CSX Railroad as an engineer with over 40 years of service. He was a member of Surfside United Methodist Church, life member of VFW Post 10420 in Murrells Inlet, SC, American Legion Post 178 also in Murrells Inlet, SC, and the Brother Hood of Locomotive Engingeers # 323. Mr. Cawthorne was predeceased by his wives, Hattie Lundy Cawthorne and Lena Hughes Cawthorne. Surviving are: two sons, Lewis Lundy Cawthorne and wife Elaine of Hickory, NC, and William Monroe Cawthorne and wife Gracie of Martinez, GA; one step-daughter, Angie J. Waggoner of Atlanta, GA; three grandchildren, Lewis Lundy Cawthorne, Jr., William Monroe Cawthorne, Jr., and Valerie Rodriquez; five great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Miriam L. Strickland. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, May 3, 2007 from Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway, SC. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Mausoleum in Conway, SC.
