Only Turner's game has changed

McCORMICK, S.C. -- Less than two years removed from Augusta State, former All-American Emmett Turner looks the same.

He's still a tall, slender golfer. He still wears regular eyeglasses when he plays - a rarity among golfers. The only difference, it seems, is the improvement of his game since he went pro.

Turner turned in another solid round, firing 3-under-par 69 in the first round of the NGA/Hooters Tour's Savannah Lakes Resort Classic at Monticello Golf Club.

In windy conditions, Craig Hicks shot the day's low round of 66. Six players are tied for second place at 67, including former Augusta State golfer Scott Jamieson and last year's runner-up Tommy Biershenk.

Defending champion Kris Blanks shot 71.

Turner is looking to improve on his tie for seventh last year. He went on to post eight top-20 finishes, finish 10th on the NGA/Hooters Tour money list in 2006 and claim rookie of the year honors.

This year, Turner has two top-10 finishes and is eighth on the money list.

"I've played well," Turner said. "It seems like I've had one round that's either kept me from winning or being out of contention."

Former USC Aiken All-American Scott Brown, who had 70, is trying to get into a rhythm after Monday-qualifying for the tournament with a chip-in in for eagle on the third hole of a sudden death playoff.

Brown has no status on the Hooters Tour. He's spending his days either trying to Monday qualify on the Nationwide Tour or play on the Tarheel Tour. A top-25 finish this week, though, will exempt him into the next Hooters Tour event.
