Protect our children and elderly

  • Follow Letters

I'm tired of all the horrible stories of rape, sexual assaults on children and attacks on elderly folks. Television news, talk shows and especially The Augusta Chronicle report them daily. Come on, lawmakers, parents and grandparents - start complaining to the judges who give actual and potential sexual predators slaps on the wrist but no jail time. If I was a judge, I'd throw them all under the jail and throw away the key.

There's no reason innocent children or the elderly should be subjected to such abuses. I was, and am, a victim, so I speak firsthand. It scars you.

Look at convicted killer and rapist Reinaldo Rivera; he said he would do it again. And look how fat he has gotten at taxpayers' expense, serving multiple life sentences. It disgusts me!

This world has definitely gone to the dogs, and Satan is very much alive. His actions are everywhere. What has happened to morality? So many grown-ups and Hollywood producers don't give a hoot; they're all out for the almighty dollar. Most Hollywood producers have some form of sex in their movies and TV shows. Even sporting events have scantily clad freaks on their shows. Are they that hard up for customers? Why does just about anything we read or see have to have some sort of sex advertised with it?

Also, regarding The Chronicle's Kid of the Day feature: Parents probably are setting themselves up to have sexual predators staking out their homes. I'm sure they're proud of their children, but is it worth risking the safety of your children?

Tina Cloer, Augusta

Ms Cloer, your letter

Ms Cloer, your letter addresses several subjects. The sexual predator laws have been intentionally misinterpreted to include teen age dating and desperate men urinating behind a bush so true predators get little or no punishment and questionable non-violaters have their lives ruined. To protect our children and elderly, the predator laws need to be clarified and our law enforcement officers and judges need to be reeducated. Also, our children and seniors need to be kept on a limited access reservation so we can watch them all of the time. Neither situation is likely. As far as Hollywood trying to make a dollar anyway they can, think free market. Most money is spent by people in the sexually active ages so sex is a good common draw. As far as the Kid of the Day feature, it's no more a draw to predators then elementary schools are predator smorgasbords. Yes, there is a problem with sexual predators in our society. Currently, the laws written to protect the public too often also protect the predators until they commit heinous crimes.

I too think the sexual

I too think the sexual predator laws need to be re-written. They include too much trivial "junk" that is really not appropriate for that category. But I agree with Ms. Cloer that Hollywood plays a strong part in the degrination of morals. And as we all know, money is the root of all evil. I remember when you couldn't have an underwear commercial on TV or show a belly button or say the seven "forbidden" words. I think those rules were there for a purpose. Now it's anything goes because everybody wants their rights, no matter how much it facilitates bad will and demoralizes our society. Satan is alive and well friends.

It certainly is good to know

It certainly is good to know that people are concerned... outraged, in some cases... rightfully so.

With hundreds of local child victims of sexual abuse annually, the problem is very real right here in our neighborhoods.

Most commonly children are sexually abused by people they love and trust, or at least know them. Perpetrators of the sexual abuse of children range from oportunistic adolescents who are experimenting to "professional" preditors. There are ways to protect children and to prevent child sexual abuse, but it will take all adults paying greater attention to what is going on.

We cannot simply teach children about good touch and bad touch and expect them to protect themselves.

Judges are pretty consistent in sentencing... but every once in a while a sentence is given that doesn't make sense... I trust that this is not the problem.

Stand up, speak up, and protect all children. It's a righteous thing to do.
