Rhodes wins suit against station

  • Follow Metro

AIKEN - Austin Rhodes has won damages from the Aiken radio station he says slandered him when two DJs made false statements about him on air.

The exact amount of the damages against Rejoice Network Inc. will be determined in a later court hearing, said John Harte, Mr. Rhodes' Aiken attorney.

The hearing has not been scheduled, he said.

In July, Mr. Rhodes, who has a show on WGAC-AM in Augusta, filed a lawsuit in Aiken County Common Pleas Court against WAAW-FM hosts Brian "Ryan B." Lamont Doyle and Charles "Champ" Walker and station owner Rejoice Network.

Mr. Harte said the lawsuit against Mr. Doyle is proceeding, but the radio host has "refused to respond to written questions," so he might be compelled to do so in court.

"We will move forward as rapidly as we can," Mr. Harte said.

He also said Mr. Rhodes has "reached an understanding" with Mr. Walker.

According to the judgment order signed by 2nd Judicial Circuit Court Judge Jack Early on Feb. 5, no one from Rejoice Network showed up for a hearing on the lawsuit Jan. 2.

Judge Early subsequently ruled in Mr. Rhodes' favor, and Rejoice did not appeal the ruling.

Since Mr. Rhodes' lawsuit was filed last year, five others have filed civil suits against Mr. Doyle and Rejoice.

The subsequent lawsuits were filed in Richmond County Superior Court, and the plaintiffs include the Rev. Kenneth Martin, the Rev. Charles N. Utley, Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength, the Rev. Clarence Moore and bank executive Cedric Johnson.

A lawsuit represents only one side of a dispute.

Although WAAW is in Aiken, the plaintiffs argue that Augusta courts have jurisdiction because most of the station's audience is across the river.

js100799. I may agree that RyanB has a problem, but Austin by far does not walk on water. He is a sick person. Who in the hell holds a racial joke day? But then again he is well aware who his listeners are.

Something to be said about

Something to be said about these radio and television stations which claim to be religious yet offer such negative comments. Some time back the Christian tv station was making very negative comments about Catholics and tithing, and a priest had to go on there and straighten things out. Plus the guy would make such tacky remarks to his wife on air. These places give nonChristians a bad impression of those of us who are decent.

I can't believe this was a so-called "Christian" station. what a shame. I've never listened to either Rhode's or Ryan B's shows, since talk radio is not for me, but certainly there is more to talk about than each other!

It amazes me that you feel

It amazes me that you feel that you've won a lawsuit, only to be found that the other parties did not appear in court. Now if the other parties did appear, would the outcome have been the same?, so don't be to quick to toot your horn not saying that I agree with either Ryan,Champ, Or Austin. Oh by the way I listened toRyan B on the morning in question about the slander, I thought everyone had an opinion, and that's what was said Ryan's opinion, and I never heard Champ say anything about the situation so how could you come to an agreement, if you never said anything about the opinion? I forgot this is the south, sue south, when you can't have your way, file a lawsuit.

AugKitty, so you think imus was funny? That just shows how ignorant your dumb behind is, and it also puts you in the same category as him. There is a lot of names I can come up with for him but I'll just keep them to myself.

cassandra- the reason they

cassandra- the reason they did not show up was because they knew that they did not stand a chance of winning. In our legal system if you refuse to stand and defend yourself then you are ruled to be at fault. So that is a win. There is a big difference between and opinion and out right slander. This was the suit against the station but there will be no surprise when Doyle pulls the same hiding game when his suit comes up in court. He gets mad when you say he is a convicted felon (check his court records) but feels it is ok to say whatever about other people. He is such a loser!

This is the most ignorant

This is the most ignorant city on the planet we have so many other issues that are going on if you ask me all of them are no saints who is. opps you might get me for slander but yes just to keep the record straight that was an opinion. Ryan may be a convicted felon but I am sure that all the other aforementioned people have skeletons. just because you are a man of god doesn't make you a saint and AugKitty we can only pray for you people like you further put this city in backwards mode. Georgialina please find a state and get some business At least Ryan B has the balls to stand up to these racist ignorant folks and uncletoms. Most of us should take a stand and quit getting pushed around.

Listens people Austin only

Listens people Austin only won by a judgement by default. Which still give the defendant a chance of three other reasons to show cause and appeal the courts decision within 90 days, but they have to be good reasons which some people don't have. So stop tooting your racial horns which don't sound right and relax this is only the beginning. Also to the person who thought Imus was funny you must be some kin(Redneck Hillbilly).

Cassandra, the Aiken side was too stupid to show up....or maybe they were smart....they either would have perjured themselves or even worse. If you don't show to play, don't bit** about the outcome. By the way, there is a difference between opinion and slander...look it up.

Right, call for Imus's head

Right, call for Imus's head on a platter, but it's ok for a brother to talk about "wackin" whites on his rap album. Imus is a blubbering idiot and proves it from time to time. The urban, thug culture that's so popular will be the undoing of the success of black people that are trying, getting educations and being positive contributers to society and their race. Learning how to make a good income and provide for their kids. Unfortunately, they're being outnumbered by the gang, street types. Go buy a chain, new shoes, jerseys, hats w/ flat bills turned sideways. a toof grill to remove any doubt as to your IQ. Learn to talk srkreet. Bill Cosby's been calling attention to this for years. Keep getting women pregnant and accepting no responsibility. It's a cycle.Let the Moms raise the kids. The black race is in trouble, it's very unfortunate and DOESN'T have to continue. If James Brown can do it anybody can. He pursued success, and earned it. It's easier to dress cool and make excuses though. Fill up prisons. It's very sad. Go check out a black college and see what young men and women that are going to be successful look, dress, and act like. THEY should be admired, not gangsta rappers.

DavidG29 you have stated many

DavidG29 you have stated many facts about some blacks but remember that's only a small portion that's program by the gangster description of life. Most of the ones you see walking the streets are doing this by choice inorder to make their parents look bad and guess what there's some whites doing the same thing as for Ryan B he states things when people call his show on the air but noone has placed a lawsuit against the call ins he's also protected under the First Admendment due to it's Constitutional also his job and yes there's a time when the lines has to be drawn. The same for Imus he stated something without facts or knowledge.

I believe you are the drama

I believe you are the drama you stir up. Hosently probably over 75% of the individuals who have decided to comment on this article, including me are not listeners of the radio station and therefore would not even know what was going on if individuals wouldn't have followed Ryan B up. We got Revs. who have lawsuits against Ryan B also. I sure wouldn't want to be a member of your congregation. Did Jesus sue when he was talked about? Think about it, the individuals would not have taken offense to what was said, many citizens wouldn't even know what was said. The reason there are so many killings in Augusta is because your sheriff is to busy following up nonsense. Everyone should do there job and leave it at that! Ryan B's job is a radio host and you can choose to listen or not, but when you get offended by comments, you are showing how much lesser of a man you are. As adults what are you teaching your children.

Does this surprise anyone????

Does this surprise anyone???? Austin Rhodes should have been thrown off of the radio years ago but because he says what all the RED NECKS want to hear, he's still there. He has slandered blacks for years but thats OK. Ryan B speaks out against Austin for what he knows is blatant racist remarks and gets sued for slander, ha-ha!!!. Who slandered who first??? Just goes to show DAVIDG29, the inequity in the justice system. That's why the prisons are full with 90 percent blacks when they only make up 30 percent (est) of the American population. As for Imus......I won't even comment on his ignorant, racist remarks.

shygirli, wakeup please. This guy (rhodes) did not win. Wow! the stupidity in this reigon. Ryan is actually correct and probably will prevail in court. His lawyers must first get a competent jury, because thats the key. Some previous comments show a bias toward the truth and demonstrate ignorance of the law. Rhodes slandered a child and will be held accountable, but the Vanes too must put tremendous efforts in the jury. Its about time the silent voices be heard.
