State statistics released Wednesday say the office on Bob Kirk Road has the eighth fastest service in Georgia: three minutes and six seconds.
"It's always nice and pleasant," said Gavin Butts, a Thomson customer. "It's a lot faster than Augusta. I know, I used to live there."
By comparison, the average wait at the Columbia County office on Evans to Locks Road was 12 minutes and 50 seconds, and at the Augusta site on Mike Padgett Highway you'd probably stand in line about 16 minutes and four seconds, said Susan Sports, a Department of Driver Services spokeswoman.
The Department of Driver Services measures the time from when a customer receives a transaction number to when service begins.
Ms. Sports said volume should be taken into account. For example, she said, Augusta's transaction number for February was 4,805, compared with 4,137 at Evans and 1,857 at Thomson.
Ms. Sports said a remodeling plan for the Augusta office should be complete April 16.
"I think the (wait) situation is going to improve even more when these enhancements at the Augusta center are fully realized," she said, adding that reducing wait times at the Augusta site could also help the Columbia County location by cutting down on Augusta customers venturing to Evans.
