Traffic takes toll on Montclair

  • Follow Letters

As a resident of Montclair subdivision, I thought it might be important to point out the ineffectiveness of our consolidated government, and its willingness to ignore safety and traffic concerns.

As most people know, Crane Ferry Road is a cut-through for vehicles to get from Pleasant Home Road to Skinner Mill Road, and vice-versa. After much fanfare and outright begging, our commissioners gave the OK for the Roads and Bridges Department to put down temporary speed humps on Crane Ferry Road. This action had an immediate effect on traffic by slowing vehicles down.

More than a year has passed, and these temporary speed humps began to deteriorate, and it was decided that they would be taken up because of liability concerns. Nothing has been put back in their places.

Now vehicles are speeding on Crane Ferry Road again, through the residential domain of one of the nicest subdivisions in Augusta-Richmond County.

The Columbia County government seems to be on the ball when it comes to protecting its citizens and neighborhoods with a plethora of permanent speed humps to slow down vehicle traffic. As the Augusta-Richmond County area grows with commercial entities, safety and traffic concerns must be addressed in neighborhoods and surrounding areas.

There has been revitalization in Montclair with new families with children moving in. If safety and traffic concerns are not realized, the deterioration of our subdivision and others will be inevitable, and thus a loss for Augusta-Richmond County.

It is my firm hope that our commissioners will be concerned about these safety and traffic issues, restore some faith in our government and take real action.

Scott F. Lee, Augusta

I understand your problem, Mr Lee, as i am a frequent traveler over Crane Ferry road. A little law enforcement would help not only in your neighborhood but in all residential neighhoods.

I grew up there--the road can be very dangerous, especially with kids riding their bikes to the park. I echo your sentiments. More cops and more tickets equals less speeders.

Have the homeowners purchase

Have the homeowners purchase some old cars, parking them on the street at key places abreast of each other. This will slow the traffic down and only allow one vehicle to pass at a time saving wear and tear on your own autos.
