New religion writer is ready for the challenges

  • Follow Your Faith

Many of the faithful - no pun intended - readers of this Religion section have probably noticed something different on the page.

The byline that has read Virginia Norton for more than a decade now reads a different name: C. Samantha McKevie.

Who is she?

Well, I'm a reporter excited about all the possibilities and opportunities that will come from covering the religion beat now that Mrs. Norton is pursuing other endeavors.

Mrs. Norton did the job wonderfully for 10 years.

That's a tough act to follow, but here's what might be my saving grace: I love to talk - especially to ask lots of questions - and to meet people, learn things and tell stories.

So I'm up for the challenge.

This area is my home. I'm a product of the Aiken County school system and a graduate of Augusta State University.

I came to The Augusta Chronicle in the summer of 2003 as a community news reporter. With the exception of a nearly half-year stint as editor of Lounge magazine, I've been with The Chronicle ever since, covering school events, festivals, museum openings, concerts, plays, grade school sports, nonprofits, trends, gardening and entertainment and doing profiles on people young and old, rich and poor, famous and not.

Some of you might remember my column The Week Ahead in 2004-05.

I've written for the Richmond County Neighbors and the Metro, Business, Your Life and Applause sections.

Aside from Sports, Religion is the only section I haven't written for, but it's an area about which I've always had a keen interest.

I'm not the only thing new. In the coming weeks, this section will also expand its coverage. In addition to religion, we will focus on faith and values, and I'll cover stories dealing with ethical and moral issues.

I want to write stories you want to read, so feel free to contact me with your suggestions, ideas or comments. I can be reached weekdays by phone or e-mail.

As I mentioned, I love to learn new things and meet new people, and with so many different faiths, denominations, beliefs and value systems in this area, there's a lot of new ground to cover. So let's cover it together. I'm ready.
