Liberal initiatives bettered our nation

  • Follow Letters

If you are a frequent reader of The Chronicle, you likely are convinced by now that the two dirtiest words in our language are "liberalism" and "socialism." Let's take a look at these two words.

Franklin Roosevelt was the first great liberal president, and he gave us Social Security. Without it, probably 85 percent of our seniors would be in severe poverty. In the South each year, flooding occurred primarily because of the Tennessee River. He formed the Tennessee Valley Authority to build dams to harness the river, and the dams provided hydroelectric power that helped industrialize our region. Forget the recreation on the river.

And to me, the greatest bill of all was the G.I. Bill. The Republican Party fought the bill, but President Truman saved it. The G.I.s came home, took advantage and got their education - then their children and grandchildren got theirs. Without it, I would not have been able to go to college. Before World War II, only a few could afford to send their young people to college. Typical enrollments in our state universities were 4,000-5,000 students. Now they are much larger because of the bill that gave people a chance to go on with their education, and they deserved it. Then President Lyndon Johnson gave the seniors Medicare and Medicaid for our poorest. Without these programs, our seniors and our poorest would be without medical care considering insurance costs today.

Now let's look at the other side. You need only glimpse at President Bush's latest budget. He slashed Medicare, Medicaid, veterans' health care and farm support. The Pentagon got the money, and the rich got the tax breaks. So maybe the liberal and his social programs really can be good for our people.

I can think of some more worthwhile social programs that the $800 billion spent in Iraq would take care of.

Jim McGaughy, Aiken, S.C.

You can take the "social

You can take the "social programs" that you're so fond of and pay for them yourself. I'm tired of MY money being given to those who are too lazy to work. Now, I'm all for taking care of seniors and those who are truly disabled....but the rest of your "social programs are a waste.
I am not "rich" by no means, but I like the tax breaks that have made my "take home pay" increase, but looks like you and yours want to do away with them. NO THANKS!!!!

I agree with sjsd17, these

I agree with sjsd17, these programs are a big money pit. I think the original intentions were good but the Liberal Dems and yes sometimes the Republicans borrowed money from these programs and never payed it back. Social Security would be in good shape if it were not for entitlements under it.

Social programs have their

Social programs have their place and some of them have made a difference. The problem with them is that they are administered by a giant public bureaucracy. Most well intended programs become a method to control and prod large groups for political purposes. Now most of these programs are considered rights and as a result have a tendency to discourage people from taking care of themselves, because others will do it for them. The fact that most of these programs were handled by the family or private charities, before socialism steped in, is an irritant to those that now pay for it. The "tax break for the rich" statement is way to stupid to respond to.

i dont know how a program

i dont know how a program that essentially will bankrupt our nation in the next 30 years could be considered a good thing.
we have nearly 60 trillion dollars of unfunded obligations over the next 30 years. that is more than all of the wealth in this country. if the gov't seized all wealth in this country they would still be broke. only our great leadership can take a bankrupt system, medicare, and financially reform it by adding a presciption drug program. the medicaid budget in georgia is now greater than the entire state budget was just 10 years ago. people over 65 control 80% of the wealth in this country, all programs should be means tested and optional. the only way out if there is one is inflation. i for one am buying lots of gold

I don't know how or why

I don't know how or why Social Security can be considered a Social Program as in a give-away from the Feds. For 40 years money was forced out of my paycheck and is now being repaid in litlle dribs and drabs. Had I been allowed to privately invest that same amount of money over that length of time, life would be a lot easier. Same goes for healthcare.

Last year when I filed my

Last year when I filed my taxes electronically, the program showed my annual income as beeing below the national average. Strange that my "take home pay" went up with the tax breaks for the rich. That must mean that more than half of this country is rich. It should be noted that to date, every country that has tried to redistribute wealth through socialism has failed. I guess the liberals figure that if they "stay the course" it will work for us.

I think a drug test for those

I think a drug test for those in line for hand outs should be in order. No pass No check. I also think if they receive a check then they should work at keeping our streets and parks clean but I guess they think it is beneath them to work. Mind you,I am talking about the young and middle age people, not the old. Government give aways are a wayof making people subserviant or slaves to the system and I agree they are a way to get and keep votes. I for one do not agree with redistribution of the wealth. I earn mine and I want to keep it. As far as taxes go and tax cuts to the rich, they deserve it because 85%prox of the taxes are paid by them. The middle earners pay the rest and the poor pay nothing. But they do get an unearned income refund. How in the world does that make them want to earn mor or better themselves. I for one am tired of seeing the same people walking the streets or sitting on their front porch doing nothing unless of course they have their own money and not mine or the hardworkers in society.

McGaughy forgot one of LBJ's

McGaughy forgot one of LBJ's major programs called "The Great Society" which di nothing but keep lazy people on welfare with their hands out. FDR was not a liberal. He was a socialist. As for social security, it is going broke because the politicians keep stealing from it and the Democrats tax hell out of our benefits.

Let's not forget Jimmy

Let's not forget Jimmy Carter, the worst President of the 20th Century. Calling him incompetent is an insult to incompetent people.

Mr. McGauphy, you need to

Mr. McGauphy, you need to take your Yankee A- - and move to Massachusetts or New York. Your liberal attitudes will be well served. You must be a college professor or work for the government. What hard working American wants to be taxed to the hilt, only to see the government give it away to the illegal aliens and the third generation welfare babies. Enough mistakes with social programs in the past should heed fair warning even to the dumbest liberal that they don't work. Get a life. Mr. McGauphy and get your head out of the sand.

Although there have been some

Although there have been some fine initiatives put forth by both sides to create a better society, only one group is responsible for the worst society-destroying government giveaway program of all time: welfare is a LIBERAL construction that has RUINED more lives than saved.

Many Of Our social welfare

Many Of Our social welfare problems are created by our Family Courts which in itself is another welfare program. They just get their funding from fathers and the matching federal dollars for the Child Support they collect. Millions of which never reach the custodial parent and ends up in state coffers!

Christmas Eve rains to dry up

If Wednesday seemed particularly wet and dreary, you would be right. The day broke the record for the wettest Christmas Eve that Augusta has ever had.
