Student accused of poisoning cookies

WOODSTOCK - A 14-year-old middle school pupil is facing discipline and possible charges after being accused of contaminating cookies served in the cafeteria.

The boy, an eighth-grader at E.T. Booth Middle School, sprinkled a powdery substance from a hand-warming packet Thursday on the cookies, which were eaten by at least two pupils, school officials said.

The pupils began to feel ill, officials said, but stayed at school.

Cleaning supply blast evacuates Tatemville

SAVANNAH - Part of Tatemville was evacuated Thursday after an explosion in the back of a city garbage truck.

After a five-hour investigation, bomb technicians determined the blast was caused by household cleaning products, authorities said.

No injuries were reported.

Around 11:40 a.m., a work crew compacted the garbage load. That's when they heard the blast, felt the truck shake and saw black smoke coming from the compactor, officials said.

The compactor was closed, preventing garbage from shooting across the neighborhood, and no fire ignited, officials said.

The crew abandoned the truck and called 911.

The new $33 million, 424-bed jail will replace the current facility.
