Marjorie Carney (EVANS, Ga.)

EVANS, Ga. - Mrs. Marjorie Selby Carney, 85, of Evans, died on February 8, 2007 at Select Specialty Hospital of Augusta, after a brief illness. She was the widow of U. S. Army Col. (Ret) Clement E. Carney. Born November 29, 1921 in Indianapolis, Indiana, she grew up in Wayne County, North Carolina. She was the eldest child of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cook Selby of Dudley, NC. A lifelong Episcopalian, she was a devout member of St. Augustine's Episcopal Church and was a long time member of the choir. During her more than three decades in the community, she was active in organizations at Fort Gordon and the Augusta area. Mrs. Carney served during World War II in the Women's Army Corps. As a Civilian she had served as head of Congressional travel at the Pentagon. She lived in many countries and enjoyed travel throughout her life. She is survived by: her stepson, Ambassador Timothy M. Carney and wife Victoria Butler, Washington, DC; a sister, Barbara Selby Stevens, Dudley, NC; brothers, Henry Blount Selby and wife Dorothy, Brentwood, TN and Robert Cook Selby and wife Lorna of Bowie, MD, as well as 12 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Clem and by her brother, Talbot Rayl Selby. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Monday, February 12, 2007 at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, 3321 Wheeler Road, Augusta, GA, with Reverend Harriette Simmons, officiating. The family will receive friends following the service, in the church parish hall. She will be inurned beside her husband in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
